Fixed that for you.

Speed limits are aimed at the lowest common denominator who use our roads.

But we've been here before over at SP&L.

Until the majority of road users accept the need for further tuition at some point in their driving career, nothing will change for the better for the individual with above average skills who knows how to handle a fast car in appropriate conditions. And even they are likely to run out of talent at some point if attempting this for prolonged periods.
I happen to strongly agree with this.... I have for over 20years believed that your driving licence should expire every 5 years and you should be forced to take the test again to get a new one.

Yes people will need to have leasons again in order to pass... but thats exactly my point!!! the driving test is a test of safety not skill and ALL road users should be capable of re-passing it or not be allowed a licence.

Incidentally to redress the scale slightly... I know someone very well who got caught speeding on a quiet road at more than the speed quoted above, copper put 'excess speed' on ticket and told him to slow down in future.

He chose to drive at that speed knowing he was breaking the law by a significant amount. The authorities need to have a proper appraisal of what dangerous driving may actually be, but apart from the momentary rush it's pretty pointless to do 150 + as you can't maintain it.

The punishment may not fit the crime but he must have been fully aware of what he was doing. If it's an important part of his life to experience that sort of speed then he should go over to Deutschland.

How embarrassing.. if you're gonna get caught speeding so badly, at least go all the way to the limiter and get clocked at 155mph!

152 just isn't as exciting! wink

150 in an M5 is worryingly easy.

I touched 140 last month on a very straight clear stretch of motorway and when I slowed down to 90 it felt slow enough to get out and walk!
Most modern mild performance cars you can get 120-130 just coming down a slip road, let alone once your on the carriageway !

<troll>personally i think 153mph in an M5 shows restraint </troll>

The HUD in mine showed 172 on a number of occaisions and I must say, it is boring as anything. 153 is merely progressing along.

This sentence (albeit suspended) is a bloody joke

250 hours community service?

I've seen muggers that have beaten up pensioners get less than that!

I have frequently driven along this (A35 Puddletown Bypass) stretch of wide, quality road at legal speeds and thought how easily I could do speeds exceeding 100 without causing anyone harm

But obviously, being the law abiding citizen that I am I resisted such urges and kept them for the next track day

A question for the legal types; Why can't a lawyer highlight a lack of consistency in previous court case rulings of a comparative nature? Or even other criminal cases that wouldn't be altogether relative?

I just don't see how someone can receive a prison sentence (albeit suspended) when speed alone does not necessarily mean dangerous driving; if the condition of the road, weather, and car were fine, how can a court prove beyond all reasonable doubt that this is the only factor it need arrive at in handing down what is usually a jail term?

The law is an utter donkey sometimes.

I would have happily signed for that...

My speed 111mph. My mitigating cirumstances were no traffic, excellent car, straight downwards sloping road and excellent visibility and weather conditions.

56-day ban and 1200 pounds fine.. thank you very much.

3 judges. 2 were women.. looking at me like I had just been coordinating the London riots.

Sorry but they have lost the plot completely. They just know that with motorists they can just do what they hell they want. Which is mostly use them as good inland revenue supplement. Burglers, rapists and thugs are not nearly as easy to target and tax, so why bother.

A female friend of mine was done for 138mph on the M11.

When asked in court if there were any mitigating circumstances, she looked straight at the magistrate and said:

"Well Sir, it had just been serviced, with new front brake pads.

And the tyres were top of the range Michelins!"

The look on the magistrate's face (and mine I'd imagine) was priceless!!

{She received a 28 day ban and a £300 fine}

I think the punishment is madness.
In this day and age with the type of cars we have and the design of them 100mph is almost nothing in the hands of a half decent driver; even 150mph is fine. By decent I mean a careful and safety concious person.

They should have variable speed limits all over the country - they have plenty of signs up to tell us useless crap however putting up variable speed limits is out the question. go figure.

The speed should be based on condition - weather - traffic - time and set a speed limit - in the middle of the night, clear sky, dry, capable car - i see no reason for a variable limit to not be at 100. this doesn't mean everyone has to be at 100 but at least people who want to and can are able to.

also the driving test should be longer, more difficult and should teach learners more - skid pan, all weather training as well. look at swedish drivers.
There are lots of variable speed limits, just that they all vary down the ways...

Ironic that the speed made the headlines and not the 20 robberies beforehand.

It's a poor state of affairs.

robberies are nothing new..

185mph in a police chase i would imagine doesn't happen that often.
