Has anyone driven one ? We used to have a 40d and on paper the M50d seems a lot more powerful (about 30% up on power + torque)?
Been thinking of buying a Cayenne Diesel but have always had a soft spot for BMW's moon buggy....
Don't mean to start a debate about whether the M-Performance models are real //M cars - if this post belongs in the General BMW section, maybe one of the mods could please move it.

No debate as they are not, but at least I don't mind even if it was a 3.0d

My sense is that BMW has been more advanced in terms of diesel engine design. The new tri-turbo has some impressive stats. My assumption was that the cayenne will have a hefty price tag (>£70k with some spec?)

Big difference to drive over 40d, which may seem difficult to imagine, but power and torque is just immense.
I must confess to not having driven the Cayenne, however as you state it will probably be a derivitive of a VW unit, which in my opinion ( Unbiased of course ) just isn't quite up there with the BMW units yet.

Greg I tend to agree with you Greg. Out of curiosity, would a car with comfort access be less likely to be stolen via OBD-reprogrammed keys ?

I had one on demo for a few days and have to say they are quick (for a diesel bus!!). I have driven the 3.0l Cayenne Diesel and it feels very sluggish but haven't driven the new one. I liked it so much I am going to order one for March to replace my current diesel car, they are by no means an M car as no 4x4 should be so in my eyes they should just badge it as an "M Sport" diesel at best, I will be ticking the de-badge option though!!!

Must try the 50d. We have a 40d on free loan from BMW at the moment and, while impressive for a diesel, it's much slower than the 50i. Similar torque figures, but it's about 100bhp down. The 50d will be interesting to try, given it's only 27bhp down and some way up on torque.

Would that be Tim Abbott, if so I've written to him in pointed terms and been given the "thatcham approved" brush off, as a result I've canned my new x5 order and after 20 plus new beemers am going elsewhere, when a company gets this complacent I vote with my wallet.
Cheers

It's very quick and handles fairly well considering how big and heavy it is. I'd have gone for an X5M, but needed 7 seats. I'm sure the 50d will be amazingly quick, but will it offer any real economy advantage over a 50i? The diesels don't get near the published economy figures and the engines totally lack the soul of a v8.
