Please post it . The last time I bought a car on a whim was in 2003 , a 1999 M5 . Drove past it on a car sales lot. I turned around and went for a closer look , 2 days later it was sitting on my drive. I should exit this thread now but something tells me it's just the beginning.....

uoted 18-21K, car looks ok outside yes but sheltered. Agree with you tho it's what you cant see. Best to let dealer look before selling.

Not really any way to roll it down without using the brakes, but you'll need the engine fired up for that unless the handbrake is free.
You have email ref M5

Trailer to a BMW dealer? Pretty much all of these activities should be possible without that. Except for the system reset, surely a new battery it should just go back to defaults or can't they design an embedded system properly?
I've just spotted M5 touring. Sufficiently valuable to get the dealer to pick it up I would have thought.

Why would anybody leave a car like that for four years?

4 years sat stagnant would have ruined all the hoses, possibly damaged / rusted the insides of the engine where the oil has long since drained to the sump, killed the coolant, killed the plugs, killed the fuel system etc.
Ed, I am sorry to be blunt, but that is totally incorrect. Hoses degrade with heat and sunlight (UV), which would not be present in a car standing still. I had the recent "pleasure" of working on two V8 engines which have stood for about 5yrs. Both of them were pristine - oil degrades, but never disappears. Nothing inside the engine will rust simply because you have left it standing still. Plugs die from firing cycles and not from standing still...

How on earth could you buy something like that and leave it sitting there for four years?!

Remarkable.

Ok, let yours sit for 4 years and then fire it up. I'll watch! Lol.

You may be right, but is be inclined to believe its gonna need some work.

Of course it will need new coolant, oil/filter, fuel filter, cabin filter/air filter, a drained tank and an injector cleaner run through the lines. But ultimately your doom scenario is way off the mark.

We fired one of the V8s as we were going to rebuild it anyway - 28yrs old engine with 130k miles on the clock and relatively unknown provenance. She fired on the button, and run sweetly.

When I had my Z4MC once I left it outside for 4mths - granted it was not 4yrs, but I just had a trickle charger connected. Fired right up and run for another 2yrs sans problems...

FFS, it's a BMW, not some vintage Ferrari or Bugatti. Just start the feckin' thing, let it get warm and then have a gentle drive to the local Shell station for some V-Power. On the way back, drop in at BMW for an oil filter and order some oil from ECP or Opie. Change the oil once it's hot and then sell it if needs be.

Get a new battery for it and get it running with some fresh fuel, brakes will need cleaning up and the tyres will have flat spots.

Then have it serviced and mot I would imagine.

M5s are getting pretty close to Ferrari on engines, certainly not some tatty old 3 series. It deserves some precautions.

This one say for nearly 8 years,

Just needed a full service, belts and battery.

He doesn't mention having to remove rust from the cylinder chambers.

It'll be fine imo. I'd start it after charging the battery and drive it delicately to the dealer/specialist for an oil and filter service and general inspection on seals, rubbers and joints. Will be a good car for someone.
