Both are very good cars. One is a great daily, (relatively) cheap to run, warrantied, lots of toys, easy to pootle about in, but provides pretty rampant acceleration when you want it, whilst being pretty chuckable & safe on the limit via Sport+. The other is twice as expensive to insure, needs servicing more often, every little rattle makes you panic about impending financial doom, it drives like a rocket powered truck around town and it will have rust/cracked subframe/f*cked headgasket at some point. Probably all at the same time, just to really kick you in the balls.
I remember the day i picked up the 135, i was chuffed, my first brand new car, what a day.
But it'll never match the first time i revved out the older car through 1st, 2nd & 3rd. That noise. The hairs standing up on the back of my neck & that slight tear of happiness in my eye told me id reached the point that id yearned for for years. I owned an M3.

Build quality is far superior on the e46 as well. No hard plastic door trims and glovebox lid.

Agree on all counts!! Build quality of modern BMW's (& most other German brands) are getting worse with each new release tbh. 1100 miles and 4 days later I have returned from the Ring in my M135i. Very impressed with it.
Today summed it up. Travelled back via Luxembourg and Spa, covering 550 miles in utter comfort. Where legal the car sat at high speed and hit the limiter many times on the autobahn. Out of interest in 8th this was 4500rpm and cruising on the limiter at 12-13mpg!
Today I had many cross country drives, the handling was brilliant. Made swift progress all the way home and the car had averaged 32mpg as I pulled into the drive since 9am this morning, 550 miles ago.
The auto box, the HK, the power the refinement are all spot on. The running costs seem cheap for what is on offer (compared to my M3!)

After a fair bit of discussion, I've bit the bullet and with the trade-in of both my 330i and 120d, I've signed up for an M135i. Delivery at the end of October and I can't wait!
I'll part from the 330i remembering it as one of the most frustrating cars I've ever driven. All understeer and with a horrid auto gearbox. It very rarely produced a smile when driving it, only frustration.
The 120D leaves me with much fonder memories of a car that gently went from understeer to oversteer depending on how the throttle was used and could do over 50 mpg cruising at around 75 on the motorway. Many's the time that I stepped out of it thinking it is a phenomenal car for the money.
The M135i will be a revelation though.

I've had an M135i/235i itch for months but I was late to the party in terms of the deals. BMW are offering 'select' finance on some used 135is which are definitely attractive. Well under £230 over 24 months assuming I let them have my trade in as deposit. The right mileage and the right spec cars. My hesitation is that figure is not a million miles from what people were paying for a lease or brand new one months ago, and it's only that low because of the whacking great deposit I'd be putting down.

Doing a PCP on a used car makes no sense. Have you seen the APR? and how miserably low the final payment is? Don't get caught in the trap of thinking the car will be worth a lot more than the final payment so you'll get that back. It never happens.Would you?
Get a dealer to quote on a new car with the same terms (big deposit etc)... it won't be too far off
New car - lease or PCP
Used car - buy with cash, and if necessary bridge with a short HP

I know, I know. I've not seen anything under £350 tbh - it would need to be a bit more attractive to tempt me out of the car I have now.

The M135i combination of huge grip, no diff, a laggy throttle and a short wheelbase make it a challenge, and you really have to unsettle the car to get things moving.
I really really want to try one with a diff.

Are you still using the Super Sport tyres? It would be interesting to see how the car behaved on something with a harder compound.I've drifted a 135i coupe around Portimao circuit without issue, so on track I'm sure at high speeds the M135i would be fine, you just don't get that satisfying low speed acceleration lock of the diff to give you safe, low speed slippy fun.
