The original plan was to save for a year but this one seems to be a good one, I can afford it and it's fairly close- hence going to see it with the intention of buying. I'm 24, got my house bought last year after being disciplined with the savings and now have fk all important to save for so why not, you're only young once.

If the guy can spunk £1800 on a clutch and flywheel he doesn't sound like the type of owner to scrimp.

If you've already got a house you're doing better than me, I just thought fk it and bought a z4m for my 30th, four years later I'm married with a baby so the m5 was bought. Finally getting keys to our first place next month. Go for it and have fun while you can. I think every penny I earned was spent on booze at your age. Personally I'd have a z4m or z3m coupe if I didn't have a kid but that's just personal taste.

It's been an itch that's needed scratching at some point, if I didn't eventually get round to it I'd regret it when the good ones have a heavily inflated price after no doubt becoming pretty rare.

Normally the younger M fans prefer the M3.

Nice to see someone with the good taste of us more mature lot!

Very disappointed.

Mechanically, the car is pretty sound. But had I known there was rust in 3 arches, bootlid and along parts of the sills and bottom of the front doors(!) I wouldn't have driven an hour and a half to see the bloody thing- specifically after having asked about rust and being shown/told there was a bit in the back left arch only. I've just got rid of a 330Ci because of rust.

Offered a cheeky £6k considering the work that would need done, with the intention of going to around £6700 but he's not going to budge much on price at all. It ain't going for £8k unless you're Stevie Wonder.

Coincidentally, the friend I went with had been offered another M5, estoril blue at that, just yesterday on the cheap from his old boss. We went to see that after getting back and it was a dog on 140k miles, sounds like the chain guides need doing, and a good few others bits as well as rust. £4k would see it home though so my friend is mulling it over. He didn't dally on the test drive though compared to the seller I went to see, really saw the Jekyll and Hyde character coming out. Ferocious.

Sorry to hear it wasn't as expected. Very annoying when you travel 1 or 2 hours to view a car and it's a let down.I know the feeling well.

On the plus side I can save a bit more, just have to keep an eye out.

I bet the jacking points hiding behind the plastic blocks were corroded on this one if it had that much on the body. I would be suprised if the black window trims that go around the top of the rear doors were not bubbling up near the quarter window, its very common.
I looked at a y plate one that had the sweetest sounding engine but it had corrosion on the bootlid and really bad in the fuel filler flap area. I had the same problem when looking for an M5, loads of crap examples & i was travelling all over the country.

Getting back on track 'Are E39 M5 prices on the rise' yes the nice condition ones are starting to hold firm & may rise very slowly. As said before i think its getting harder all the time to find a nice M5 at a reasonable price.

Simon.

The funny thing was, the jacking points and underside were alright. I knew to check these as a B10 a saw recently had rotten ones. There was a bit of bubbling around the back right window trim but fuel cap area had no rust.

Even if it had been a front wing I could have lived with that but to have to sort 3 arches, underside of doors (this was strange and had my friend concerned, he's not seen that before), and the boot release/key area was far too much at near £8k. More frustrating given the fact the seller either lied to me or is ridiculously ignorant regarding the bodywork of his car- there's no way you couldn't see the bubbling on the front arches.

Unfortunately there are a lot of poor examples out there now. Well, maybe that's a bit unfair - maybe they just show their 10+ years and 100k miles as any car that is so practical and useable would, but I was looking for something that had been cared for in such a way that it belied its years and I could keep it that way for the next 10 years+ as I know how I care for my cars and would maintain whatever the original condition was!

I looked at loads before I found the one I was happy with - probably took about 6 months and don't know how many hundreds or thousands of miles travelled in total (a 200 mile round trip wasn't unusual). If you persevere you will find a good one in the end! Some that sounded like they probably would have fitted the bill sold before I could get there (I could only view at the weekends) so presume they were good to go so quick. In the end I paid a lot more than I had hoped but got a mint 60k car that has only needed a new set of boots and general maintenance in the couple of years since, but I still think you can get lucky and get something really nice in the sub 10k range.

For reference I bought mine last year for 7.5k on an 02 plate (95k on clock). Full bmwsh and bmw warranty with insp 2 completed the day before I bought it...now even with a careful owner etc parts need changing to keep things tip top...I think total spend to date is around 4k. No major engine work but susp refresh, alternator, sensors, tyres. It all adds up so keep a fund of around 2-3k to spend in the first year in fairly short order. Then hopefully it should calm down! General age is a factor beyond normal w&t. I would suggest getting phil crouch to take a look at any serious candidates. Could save you a lot in the long run!

People always say that "spent a few grand to get tip top" but I never see the years where normal spend occurs!

it depends on what you want to do to the car. I am planning to refresh the suspension components at some point but its not necessary, it rides and drives great so the "need 4k for the first year" is not a true guide. Its the same for absolutely any car you buy used, you might need to get things fixed.
