E39 M5 prices on the rise ?

it depends on what you want to do to the car. I am planning to refresh the suspension components at some point but its not necessary, it rides and drives great so the "need 4k for the first year" is not a true guide. Its the same for absolutely any car you buy used, you might need to get things fixed.
Sure, the point is things will need to be addressed and service items like discs and tyres cost more with an m5. I'm happy enough as I figure the car would still sell at the same price I bought it and it drives even better then it did...Patrick Bateman said:
But had I known there was rust in 3 arches, bootlid and along parts of the sills and bottom of the front doors(!)
I see this all the time on E39s in London. I'm not a mechanic, I just happen to own an E39 so notice them more. That and as you mention, inside the fuel filler - surely this is just a fairly generic weakness on this model? Even mine has begun to show some rust on the leading edge of the nearside rear arch. I reckon £150 cash to get it sorted. Not that much really...Thoughts?

To get it sorted properly on the one I saw you'd be into 4 figures.Thoughts?
I was quoted £1000 excluding VAT to do my 3 series. That was 4 arches (replacing the fronts), both sills and the bit between the boot and the rear bumper.
People on here said that was too cheap.
Dealing with a couple of spots is manageable, not half the car though.

I'm certainly interested to see how many E39 M5s you find without spots or bubbling around those areas but then again, it's not a deal breaker if limited. £1,000 would be a PITA though.
There is an amazing estoril blue one in the pistonheads classifieds at the moment if your budget will stretch, however being so rare and so clean/low mileage I doubt you would loose on it!.
Its a shame that one in Scotland is so rotten, its very similar to mine with regards to mileage and age etc, although by the sounds of it mine has considerably less rust!
Having said that, Mine does have both rear arches starting with a bubble on each although nothing along the boot lid/fuel filler cap. However, I do have a receipt in my history for a rust repair around the filler cap from BMW. It came to £465 from a main dealer body shop in the back end of 2009 if that's of interest to anyone.
Lastly, I am another fairly young M5 enthusiast/owner at 26 - so your not all old! I did have an M3 evo a few years ago but it just didn't feel that special unless you were ringing its neck. The M5 gives me aural pleasure at 20mph!

Does anyone know anything about this example? It's the spec I want, but I have suspicions. An identical advert was up earlier this year, and at one point the same car, same description was listed by two different dealers. Also the non-stock exhaust is a concern, as is the claim of 109k miles in the details, but 107k in the text. If the car has been 'rejected' back to the same dealer, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Funnily enough, I saw this car earlier and thought to myself, "I need to see that" and nearly jumped straight in the car. Luckily I didn't as after doing a quick search, it proved that this example was probably too good to be true.Does anyone know anything about this example? It's the spec I want, but I have suspicions. Looks as if the garage is a bit dodgy and has been registered under different names.
There's a post somewhere on here, so I'll see if Ivan dig it out.
Would be interested to see if anyone's near by that could take a look?
Here's the other topic about this particular garage: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=126...

Thanks, that confirms everything I suspected. I'll keep looking. Will report to Autotrader too. I knew PH would come up trumps, what a great place skeeterm5 said:
To be honest, if the e39 missed its running in service anything serious woud have surfaced by now.
Given the age of all e39 m5 cars nw buy on condition not a missed service 10 to 15 years ago.
