Are you Wantage based or are you slumming it in Newbury?

The only thing you have to be extremely cautious of around the Oxfordshire area is radar cars. There are always a few out and typically they like to pretend they are playing CoD as a sniper and hide in full cammo behind the grassy knoll.
One of the nice villages just north of newbury (not a very large one, so not going to gove location of my beautiful new car away in too much detail on a public forum!), not a massive fan of hooning it on the road - prefer track days. That road to wantage though...! smile

The Wantage road is good and like you I don't hoon and hate the phrase, you can actually have a lot of fun at legal speeds. There are some great drives, Long Benton road other side of Thame used to be good but the surface was a bit err undulating at times

Now my favourites take in quite a loop. https://www.google.com/maps?saddr=Newbury,+Berkshi...

it might need a little finishing off but basically it takes in some great roads oh and it has a stop off in Dorchester for some food!

That's what people who live in Didcot say to try and appear posh.

I like your post thumbup & my mrs says I am mad so I think you could be right hehe I am certainly fickle too as I always change my car because I want something different only to then want my old car back, sold my Cerb as I wanted a change swapped it for a Z4M didn't reckon much to that, then wanted a E92 M3 now don't reckon much to that too & now wished I still had my Cerb...it's a nightmare! smile
I had the same problem, amigo. I rectified this when I bought a GT3. It is all things to all men.

Of course I then needed a cheap daily...
Your GT3 is one of my all time favourite motors tbh a totally complete allrounder...you have chosen very well & they look the dogs to me aswell, enjoy. thumbup
Ahhh real people discussing real cars and proper driving. This is refreshing, satisfying talk of driving has been getting slim lately. I'm in it for the driving pleasure and always will be.

How has the Gt3 been to live with? I loved my turbo, I thought as a driving experience it was a LOT better on track than people give it credit for. Actually struggled (personally) to justify the change to a gt3. I love the raw connection and feel of the gt3 the brakes, steering and throttle response feel so so good but the feeling of unrelenting, splitting at the seams violence, all four wheels scuttling and grabbing for grip as you cling on for dear life out of the bends was hard to replace for me. Unfortunately the weight and heat from the turbos made keeping on top of maintenance unjustifiably expensive to run as a track car. Then on the road the cabin felt a bit claustrophobic after too many hours.

I found myself craving (for me) the perfect combination of a 996 gt3 (not as grunty or good looking but just feels closer to the action to me than the 997 gt3) and an rs4/m5 for the road. Something with comfy seats, sufficient overtaking power and manual gearbox.

Only question is, sales bullst apart how easy is it to keep on top of the maintenance of a frequently tracked and pretty hard driven gt3? What typically wears out/breaks and how often?

p.s. sorry for partially invading a 1M thread with this but as the 1M is the last remaining drivers car bmw offer I figure those considering it are probably quite like minded.

On a Porsche, not a lot. Just don't over rev it and change the pads for a decent compound. Maybe get some geo to save the tyres.

On a BMW, loads will break. Diffs, gearboxes, Racks, Brakes. All a bit fragile if you press on.

Thanks and shame that. I found my 3.0 e36 5speed to be one of the most unbreakable cars ever made (and believe me I tried!). E46 felt good too and my current e39 m5 mile muncher feels pretty well screwed together but I doubt its ever going to be a track car for me and only gets the stick 10% of its life on the road as I'm getting older, and it just doesn't suit the m3 hooliganism driving style the same.

I've heard modern bmws are suffering 'mercedes short sighted accountant' syndrome but hoped the 1M might proove different as its quite a back to basics animal.

This had 2 diffs, 2 gearboxs, a rack and a steering wheel in 20K miles...

This was hard as nails, but that is because had fortunes spent on it... Started life as a 3 litre GT 5 speed smile

Don't track your E39. It'll st a vanos as quick as you can say "the engine's making a funny noise, mummy!'

Shocked to hear about the CSL I thought the e46 felt solid :/ apart from being a bit rubbery slotting into gears.

Thanks for the tip on the e39, it was tempting to have a play as feels very competent when thrown about a bit on the road, but wasn't sure how reliability would fare. I like my currently silent vanos so will plan my return to tracks properly and sort out the depleted gt3 fund.

Will leave this thread now. To the OP let us know how the 1M is. It's something I've never even sat in but simple ingredients and a couple of turbos on the faithful straight 6 does sound like quite a package smile

yes I know and also there are some great roads to the other side of witney but the return to oxford is dull, unless I looped it out towards the other side of Bicester then down long Benton back up towards oxford via Little Milton...oooh now that's an idea. There is a fantastic cut through from the Newbury a4 roundabout that goes over the downs to Lambourn that way too which is somewhat special

Ah he is just trying to scare you! Any car regularly tracked is going to have issues, they are built for road and occasional track but I guess the likes of the GT3 are more track than road focussed so more up to the strain... that said, I've always found special beemers a bit more temperamental than other marques but then they are usually on the current leading edge of available technology in a mainstream kind of way.

Best all round track car? Classic Mini as you'll st a brick on the breaks before it will throw a fit due to oil starvation and if it does, 20 quid and its fixed. Always loved the gt3 mind but the lack of torque.....

Thanks for the advice - if there *is* a key weakness i should have asked about, a known dodgy batch, a recall, etc - don't tell me now, as it's done! smilesmilesmile

EXCITED.

Use the revs. Here -look. Monza, 996GT3-RS ragged out to 8,200 rpm. Not much lives with it. Including a CLK black (3 minutes, 997 GT3 and look how slow it makes the 2 CSLs look at the end). Handsome bloke driving, too biggrin

No need for revs, get a GT2 and luxuriate in the torque, no need for all that noise and thunder either (along with all that frantic gearchanging). Imagine how fast you'd be with some proper torque Angus hehe
