What is all this cobblers about no torque in an E92. It has revs. Revs x torque = power. Power is the class A, not beard dribbling torque. It is an M car, not a ferkin Taxi.

If you think torque is the great provider, then the turbo nasty 1M is for you.

But those who know how to use all the revs will have bigger smiles.

Christ, they'll be babbling on about how good a diesel will be in an M...

God rot 'Torque'
I trump your argument with having owned a Vtec Yo S2000 and I double trump with all the large capacity v8s, v6s, il6's etc over the years. I absolutely understand exactly what you mean about there being nothing as alive as a high revving NA. There is simply nothing like it but torque, torque is like a drug and once you've sampled torque you want more of it. If you play your cards right you can have torque, revs and power.

I love revs but I also like to drive on a day to day basis and for that you need torque. On top of that just how often can you seriously use the revs. Even that old s2000 (fantastic engine, brilliant gearbox) was breaking the speed limit in 2nd if you explored the revs. It made it utterly utterly useless on a daily basis and meant if you were enjoying its ability you were either on track, in Germany or prepared to lose your license for a long time.

I used to own a SL65 that had over 1000N/M torque, so I am aware of what it is. The most incredible thing was the pure stomp it had, but that was much more to do with the 650+BHP...

Torque is for old spunkers who can't drive properly. Chris Goffey and William Woolard would be torque fans...

Power. It is where the real deal is.

hehe The swear filter lets 'spunker' through!

My 1M has 430bhp, nearly 500 lb.ft torque and revs to around 7000rpm. I can't believe any true petrol head would call it boring or for "old spunkers" biggrin

Spunkers?! Brilliant! I am a spunker but these days make do with a lot less. I got board of torque and find the 39 a very nice classic compromise but then the gear ratios are pretty spot on

430bhp makes it interesting. The torque figure, well, that is for elder gentlemen and producers of seminal fluid... biggrin

I am just railing from people poo-pooing a V8 that revs to 8,400 on the grounds it has no torque. They are clearly clueless and giving them a gem of a power plant would be casting pearls before swine.

Torque, Schmork!

Haha! Admission time. My car was the one used by Evo mag when the 1M was launched as an alternative (second hand M3 or new 1M). I was impressed by the 1M as it handles so nicely and has a very lithe chassis. But the engine was nothing compared to the M3. And the M3 is much more handsome.

I don't remember being bowled over by the torque in the 1er or missing any in the E92... But then again my prostate is in order biggrin

I think the 1M is a good car, BTW. smile

I never poo-pood the V8, I just couldn't see the attraction on the road. Don't get me wrong, I love NA cars and when I had my little Caterham Superlight, I'd rev the bolts off of it. Great fun but I could use most of the power on the road without going silly fast. Do the same in the M3 on the other hand and you're hitting some serious speeds.

Absolutely agree. I love my M3 V8 however things only start getting interesting at the legal limit in UK and it's all too easy to find yourself driving through the gears into serious ban territory.

I poo pood the V8 in the M3 but then I used to own a V8 that used to rev to 7500rpm had 420bhp & had 380ft/ibs of torque that's 85ft/ibs more than my current M3 in a car that weighed over 400kgs less...its no wonder I think the M3 is gutless lower down the rev range...still love the sound it makes though & I wouldn't swap it...yet! smile

I wish I could put the C63's engine mated to a manual gearbox into the M3 that way it would have decent power & torque...happy days driving

I just like the accessibility of the 1M & the performance is where you need it in the real world, I love exploring 8400rpm in the M3 but you are always gambling with your licence as you say.

i'm just EXXXXCCCCIIIITTTTTEEEEEDDD!!!

(and had a few glasses of wine to celebrate being excited too)

I've had a few individual drives in a couple of hig-revving NAs (VTECs in this case) - and I loved them. but i think that's the point - they were somebody else's car!

Great to be a passenger in, great to try for yourself once or twice, maybe great if you have the luxury of a toy car for the occasional Sunday (although if you do: go racing!), but to live with the the thing? Would have done my head in. Even before you talk about filling up every other day.

I have the utmost respect for those in an E92 who do get the "thrill of motoring" every day by taking it to the red line on the way to Tescos, but I just think for me in every day situations i'd end up feeling non-plussed 80% of the time, and only properly engaged at the occasional track day or rare blast up the b4944 from Newbury to Wantage on a sunday morning. all i've read about my 1M says i'll get more out of it more of the time.

I'm exited, by the way.
