Very very slight steering wheel vibration in new M5.
Its very slight, you cant see any movement in the steering wheel just feel it.
Not sure if this is a vehicle trait or not, wondered if anyone has had similar experience before it get booked in to BMW

Ehm no, I don't. I don't own one, I only test drove one in January at very early morning, the most impressive thing I noted is how brutal but consistent were the shifts but I don't remember the steering had any issues...

No vibration here - not a huge amount of feel either.

You don't have 'lane departure' as one of the options. This is suposed to vibrate the steering wheel when you cross white lines / cats eyes.

Test drove an F10 M5 at the end of last year, that had a small amount of vibration as you describe. I'd not be surprised if these cars were as sensitive as other BMWs regarding wheel balancing. I'd report it to BMW anyway, but investigate and see if any local garages have a Hunter GSP9700 road force balance machine, there are only a handful in the country.

It's not the lane departure warning.
It's a really faint and slight vibration.
Just wondered how they tighten up the steering to increase the feel, maybe it's to do with that.
Will book in for further investigation.
Thanks guys.

Any progress or development on this Yil?

I have a similar issue with my new M6, a faint wheel vibration at 90 leptons or above. It's more apparent when theres a change of load on the wheels, such as the smallest amount of steering loc, lifting off/braking, accelerating etc.

I took it to Tyres Northampton yesterday who balanced my front tyres on their special Hunter Roadforce balancing machine (which includes moving the tyres to the correctly weighted position). I had success with them when I had similar issues in my SLS but it's made little difference in the M6. I did rush them somewhat so will be taking back next week to give them another shot at it, but odd (and disappointing) how despite everything they did, it's not made any improvement.

Anyone else notice this 'characteristic' with their F10/12/13? (Note that it is very slight so may not be noticeable to some people - I am very sensitive to it though!)

I just got my 2014 F10 M5 3 days ago.. 50 kilometres in, i noticed the vibration. I was really scarred at first that it might be related to the engine. On a down hill i put the car on neutral and the vibration was still there. I immediately took the car to the service for rod balance. Unfortunately it did not help. As most people said, the vibration is barely noticeable but its there. You can even feel it if you touch the rear mirror. (even less noticeable though). If anyone have a solution on this. Please let me know...

Had it from new on my car too and both the other f10's I drove had it. Not always noticeable and in some modes it is more noticeable than others. It is very slight and I'd imagine some have it but they don't notice it. There's loads on American M5 sites about itfrown

I had a similar issue with an e92 M3. BMW refused to agree there was a problem until I ended up speaking to the DP.

Eventually they agreed there was an issue and carried out a full geometry check and alignment, made a couple of adjustments and hey presto the vibration went away.

I'd suggest trying the above. DON'T get it done at a Main Dealer though as you'll get penetrated from the rear against your will.

After some skank jumped a red & hit the rear offside rear wheel on my car, the Main Dealer said that wheel looked a little off camber & thus i should get it checked there at a cost of £250. Thought that was a tad expensive so looked for a local tyre place with Laser Alignment & off i went. Surprise surprise all 4 wheels were well within BMW spec & no adjustment needed. Total cost of this was £0. I was that chuffed with the customer service that i agreed to try them 1st when the wife's 20" Q5 tyres needed changing. The next pleasant surprise was when this was followed up a week or so later, they were £10 cheaper than Blackcircles (deliver only price) so a bit of a win win.

Slightly off topic there but i'd defo suggest getting the geo checked as could well be as simple as camber/alignment out slightly or a wheel weigh missing.

The main dealer did mine as a warranty item so no cost to me.

I had this when I collected my car brand new. It carried on for approx 200 miles, but then vanished - I put it down to the tyres breaking in.

Having owned an F10 M5 for a year now, I'm experiencing problems with "wheel wobble" I've had the balancing carried out at three separate specialist, all with the same result, I'm sending it to a BMW main dealer next week for a service and will be requesting them to attend to this irritating problem, apart from that the M5 is the best all round performance car, returning on average 23 + mpg and we don't hang about, will let you know how things turn out next week.

Unless your're lucky, just about the only way to balance wheels properly is on a Hunter GSP9700 Road Force balance machine. I've spent ages trying to get rid of high speed wheel vibrations by getting wheels balanced at various places, finally tried on of these and never looked back. If I've ever had steady speed vibrations, getting the wheels balanced with one of these has fixed it first time.

very very very likely a small kink in a rim.
A lot of people don't realize they have them and just as many wheel balancers don't even bloody check for them. I have an F10 with 19's and they had a slight kink on the outside and inside of the rim of the front alloy and used to produce an ever so slight vibration. Alloys changed - problem gone.

With Most M5's having 20's no doubt this can be a very valid reason for the issue.

note: My bme dealer didnt see the kinks and kept balancing the dam thing, eventually went to two other wheel balancers and the third one found it and showed me and it was clear to see when the wheel was spinning
