Im about 2500 miles into my M135 ownership and have a tyre question.

firstly i know the car should have supersports on it. and mine came with runflats. that is something im stuck with for now until they wear out and i replace them with the proper tyres.

However i am now faced with the prospect of snow/ice driving on runflats.

am i better off getting some winter boots on the car to tide me over the crappy months and avoid smashing up my new toy or are the supersports good in ice/snow.

i dont want to waste the runflats as it doesnt make financial sence but putting winter boots on in the near future would effectivley prolong the date i can bin the runflats even longer.

not sure what to so for the best. what i dont want to do is find out runflats are even more useless in the ice than normal tyres and get myself into any bother with the local ditches!

can anyone who has driven the M135I in winter with runflats and or winter tyres comment on this.

cheers
Jim.

I haven't experienced it but I collect my m135i on Monday on supersports. I've already bought a set of hankook winter tyres to fit the oem wheels which will go on the following weekend.

Personally don't want to risk smashing my car through a fault of my own like skimping on proper tyres

I can tell you now the car will go nowhere in the snow.

Even half an inch of the stuff.

The runflats are also dire in cold wet conditions.

my main thought is ive heard so many times on here "never ever fit anything other than supersports to the car". if that statement is correct then that would seem the advise is that winter tyres should not be fitted.

As i have neither and have crappy runflats i dont know whats best to do. limp along with runflats and replace ASAP with supersports or buy winter tyres and be stuck with runflats for longer when i change them back.

I dunno why you have runflats in the first place but you should be able to off load them on flea bay.

Winter tyres are a must IMHO.

That is strange considering there is a range of winter wheels & tyres recommended by dealers for the car.

I have winters on now cause I know it will be undriveable on the Supersports round here in the frost/snow.

the run-flats were an option on the M135i but most people seem to have the supersports (as mine does). as another poster said, the car will be ste in snow on either.

I live in Cornwall so hopefully won't be too badly affected, but I have a defender if needed..

I did run my F11 on winters last year before swapping it for the 135i and it handled differently, and i'd be interested to hear how other owners feel the car is on winters.

The BMW option wasn't cheap - I think around £1500 for wheels and tyres (and I now don't need the 17's, but luckily the tyres will fit the OH's S-max).

Goodyear Ultra Grip8s are my weapon of choice on the snotter.

BMW charge a small fortune for their tyre and wheel combos.

Also if the OP has runflats he may not have the tyre inflation kit. Something to be mindful off.

and yes the Supersports are useless in snow.

They weren't cheap but I bought the BMW set of 17' with Continental TS830p winter tyres. To summarise...superb.

Got me through a snowy Leeds winter no problems.

I've bought a set of Nankang winter tyres in 225/40 18 for the OEM rims and a set of these to put the OEM MPSSs on, but in matte gunmetal: http://www.bmautosport.co.uk/showroom/product_info...

Only thing is, I haven't even taken delivery of the car yet! biggrin
But I was busy buying wheels and tyres for other family cars (from http://projexuk.com/wheels/ ) so added these to the pallet.

Front engined RWD will mean zero traction in snow on normal tyres. Ask any Merc or BMW owner. Winter tyres are essential if you want to get moving on snow and we're predicted to get a lot this year...

Can you stretch a 225 over the rear 240 rims?

We get our M135i next week and I was thinking of going 255/35 on the rear (because there is little to no choice in the standard 245/35 rears for winter tyres). Also, this size means the overall diameter is only 7mm different from standard so is little different to driving with tyres that have 3.5mm of wear.

Its a popular size so supply is plentiful - what's the thoughts of going to this size?

Rears are 8"

Easily get a 225 on them with a slight stretch

I've gone for the 225-40-18 square winter setup on mine

The other option I've seen is the X1 steel wheels. You can get a full set on eBay with tyres for £600. They look crap but it's entirely functional.

Daft question maybe but could you fit winters to just the rears? Or would there be little point?

You might get traction but how will you steer?

It's actually the recommended BMW size for winter tyres. No problem on an 8 inch rim.
Although those aftermarket wheels I've bought are 9", so definitely not good for the winters, but they're for the 245/35 MPSSs.

What et have you gone for on the 9's?

Not seen anyone try a 9 on the rear. Will need lots of camber?

et40 rear, et35 front (8 inch).

The rears are only an inch wider, should that cause a problem? The supplier knows they're for an M135i and they're listed for BMW 1 series specifically.

There's a thread on the babybmw forum about an 8x18 et32 on the back and needed to add negative camber to clear.

You've got another inch on that!
