OK, I know many of you have been there done it, I want to take all of the posts I've read and distill into a few key questions.

I deliberated for soooo long, and finally slapped down the cash, I picked up my M3 from Ridgeway in Salisbury a few weeks ago, what a great bunch,Ridgeway in Salisbury, among a huge group of arrogant BM dealers I've had the displeasure of dealing with.

So, as we all know, the sound is muted (I'm a TVR owner), I did think the coolest and safest option was the BMW sports exhaust option, the best I can get out of them is £2999.

For half that there is Miltek, Eisenmann, etc, I really don't want to go down the road of Akro.

1. My car is under factory warranty, does changing out the back box really effect that warranty?

2. I'm looking for an option which is not as tame as stock, but doesn't suffer from drone and is not unsociable,

As usual, I bow to your collective knowledge

Thanks as usual

JC

Search "OEM exhaust mod" "m3" on YouTube.

Almost undetectable and cheap.

+1 most owners that I've read have been really happy with the results, the odd M performance exhaust also comes up for sale on M3cutters so it's worth keeping an eye out & usually they are much cheaper than bmw asks.

I'd look for a used option and save a packet.

In answer to your questions:

1. Changing exhaust will not invalidate entire warranty of the car, only that of the exhaust (obviously). If you are worried about warranty issues would suggest staying away from remapping with exhaust changes and dont remove the Cats. Backbox changes alone are safe and effective for noise not power gains

2. As said previously search oem exhaust mod - m3cutter.co.uk is a good resource. I did it to mine a couple of months after i bought the car - greatly improves the experience with almost no drone and can be had for less than £300.

Another Ross signing in to vote for the OEM mod. It does not affect your warranty and sounds terrific. I bought a second hand back box off the 'bay for i think about £200 which had only done 300 miles from new before the owner put a full akrapovic system on his new e92. The only issue for me which won't affect you is that as i have an E90 - the tail pipes protruded a little from the rear of the car as it came from an e92 - so BTB exhausts who did the mod - shortened the tail pipes and shrouded them in some natty rectangular shrouds - so that from a distance it looks very discreet - although close up you can see the 4 pipes. BTB commented that it sounded the best V8 they had heard - which when you think of some of exotics they deal with was quite a compliment. Do it OP as soon as possible - it will transform your enjoyment of the car!

Another +1 on the OEM exhaust modification. It's my second favourite mod on my E92 M3 after my F10 M5 gear knob.

If you do go down the BMW Performance exhaust route don't spend £3k on one. There are owners on M3Cutters who are being quoted / paying £2,495 for theirs.

Just had my e92 in for the OEM exhaust mod. absolutely frickin delighted with it. sounds like it should! not much/any louder at idle, low revs or motorway cruising but give it a poke and it sounds epic. call Mike at Edwards Motorsport in west drayton

does it sound much louder on cold start? i.e. would it be even more likely to wake up the neighbours?

I have done the 2.5 pipe mod (wrapping the two full perforated pipes plus half of the other two pipes)just waiting for it to come back from the welders, have done this on a spare box I bought last week so I can keep the original for a few trackdays,it will sound so much better than OEM,

Been toying with a new exhaust since buying my car, the oem might be the way to go. What's the going rate for a garage that has done a few of these before?

did mine for £220, which seemed pretty reasonable.

asked my girlfriend to stand behind it in my (closed) garage last night and listen to me rev the engine....poor girl.

Eisenmann sounds great my brothers car sounds fantastic, his mates has the OEM mod (which is cost effective) it is good but even he admits my brothers has more depth.

Anyone here done the full akrapovic evolution?

Have three questions
How is the sound
Did you get a dyno performance increqse in line with the claims
Are there any emission or insurance issues

thanks

I had a tubi rumore on one of mine, sounded like thunder incredible noise at WOT, not sure they make them anymore though.

Also had a Miltek that was quite good but would probably go with the hack of the standard back box instead, unless you're going the Tubi/akra route.
