You see...it's threads like this which prompted my PH request to have a separate CSL forum to differentiate our car from the high volume, run of mill, mass produced "regular" M cars...M3, M5, M6 etc......and don't even get me started on the M135 (or for that matter 1M) M wannabe tat....Audi S line anyone ?

Ah yes, the csl a proper M car. As the BMW engineer said all modern M cars are for fat executives who want their toys.cs1874 said:

Well I guess it is a BMW conceived, designed, developed by M Division BMW out of Garching?
Ahem…"M Cars haven't been hand built in Garching since the E34 M5 went out of production in 1995. "….and
"So as it's sits between standard series BMWs and Motorsport vehicles according to BMW's own internal logic, marketing strategy and comparable with past models, it should be able to be discussed in either venue without upsetting anyone. Unless M owners are a lot more precious than I've ever known them to be before. They're not just trim levels, there are hardware changes with M division input and development and exist as specific models. "
Mmmmm….sounds pretty much like the M135i to me….BMW conceived, designed, developed by M Division BMW….your description, not mine.
Secondly you have to realise that when marketing men speak and they say "input" they mean "someone did ring up on Tuesday and we told them it sounds fine"

That's ridiculous, it's a variant of M3. Plenty of the "mass produced M cars" are rarer than E46 CSLs, including the E46 CS at just 275 built... UK CSLs built: 542
Rest of World CSLs built: 841
Total CSLs: 1,383
Rarer UK models: E9 CSL (500), E12 M535i (450), E24 M635CSi (524), E28 M5 (187), E30 M3 , each special version, E34 M5 3.6 (524) & 3.8 (343 of which only 139 were the 6 speed version, of which only 50 were LEs), E36 M3 3.0 saloon (415), (E36 M3 GT Individual (50), E36 M3 Evo saloon (694), E36 M3 Evo Special Edition (50), E36 M3 Evo Anniversary (25), E46 M3 CS (275), Z3 M S54 Roadster (73), Z3 M S54 Coupe (165), E61 M5 (222), E64 M6 (420)
Rarer Rest of World models: E26 M1 (399 road cars), E34 M5 Touring (891), E34 M5 six speed (752), E36 M3 GT (350), E36 M3 Lightweight - internally called CSL (126), E36 M3-R (15), E36 M3 GTR (2), Z3 M S54 Roadster (271), Z3 M S54 Coupe (269), E61 M5 (803)
2002 Turbo was also designed, developed and built by M (but not designated M2), almost as rare as E46 CSLs at 1,672.
Heck, there's only 575 X5 M50ds...

Many straws being clutched at here.
Sub M brand brings car that's faster and more fun to drive than probably most "proper" M cars, M brand owners get all pompous and huffy and fling insults at the new boy.
M owners confuse the sub brand with the woefully poor M Sport tat branding in a lame attempt at point scoring.
Sub M brand owners simply enjoy one of BMWs most fun cars in years while also not paying much for the privilege. M owners get even more huffy and storm off in a huff.
The World continues turning....
