Hi all,

proud owner of a (new to me) E92 M3. Black/Silver with a few toys.. Very pleased so far. Obligatory picture attached smile

Couple of questions if I may:
  • Anyone else had shimmy issues 75-90mph? Mine was quite bad, and a trip to swindon tyres this morning for road-force balance, and tracking has significantly improved but not totally eliminated it
  • Is there anywhere recommended which sells brake discs relatively cheaply? The rears are evidently shot on mine
many thanks! Dave.

Lovely looking motor, very jealous as I really want one of these. Did you got for a manual version... What do you think?

Can't help with the shimmy... I would have said tyres but these don't have run flats and it sounds like you have done most of the simple stuff already to eliminate warped alloys, tyres and balance issues. I can only suggest its either a warped disc or bushes???

Cracking looking car OP yes

Sorry, can't help with the shimmy question but could well be any number of issues to include tyres (as on a 911 I owned couple of years ago), worth having those checked if all else fails.

I'm sure you'll get it sorted and enjoy your car thumbup

I've had my E92 M3 for over two years now and I've never had a high speed shimmy so this is not an inherent trait of the vehicle. As suggested it may be a disc or possibly a tyre with a heavy spot.

I've not replaced the brake discs on my car yet but I believe some owners on M3Cutters go for Textar / Pagid / Zimmerman discs. I think EuroCarParts sells some or all of these discs.

Lovely car, enjoy!

What do you mean by a shimmy? If it's the tyres leaving the road or a wheel judder than this isn't normal.

Are you liking the car otherwise? I found it a slow burner but love mine now (had a bit of a love hate relationship at first!).
The settings are subtle at first but make a real difference. And some engines are very sensitive to fuel type. Mine hates she'll nitro and Esso supreme but runs like a dream on Sainsbury's super, very odd but just go with what works best.

Congrats, looks lovely.

Get the front thrust arm ball joints and bushes checked, they maybe the cause of your shimmy, if it not balance or out of round wheel/tyre.

Check ECP for discs, they sell both Zimmermann and ATE, I'd go for ATE.

thanks guys for the comments.

It's a manual by the way, don't do many miles these days, and short of a GTR, I didn't want my cogs changed for me. No matter how good the 'box may be.

Love the car so far, keep finding a requirement to mash the throttle and hear the engine sing! Cracking unit. Considering the OEM exhaust mod next month.

Seems discs really are as expensive as they seemed smile

Discs and tyres are in the future, it's mostly eliminated now, so hopefully will be fully solved in due course. Will have the thrust arms checked when it's next on a ramp too - thanks for that.

I can certainly recommend the OEM exhaust mod. I had mine done for £120 and it sounds epic.

I can also recommend the F10 M5 gear knob. It is quite simply the single best mod you can do to a manual E92 M3. It transforms the gear change from a tall springy feel of the OEM knob to a shorter solid feel. It retains the illumination as well.

I don't know what year your car is but I can also recommend a CIC Retrofit and LCI rear lights as well. It's expensive owning an E92 M3. biggrin

Where did you get exhaust mod for that price? Someone else was talking up 200quid in Bristol. (I'm in the southeast)

I'll check the gear knob mods smile

Mine missed LCI by a couple of months I think. It's first registration was June 2009. Both cic and later lights are pricey mods I think? The nav seems even older fashioned than the one on my A6 :P I'm keen to get DAB added, probably this is the first priority....

The mod was done in Plymouth but the company no longer do it.

I thought the CIC system was introduced in 2008. If that's the case you should already have it. If you don't, I did mine for less than £800 including coding. The LCI rear lights was about £500 including harnesses, I did my own coding. The F10 M5 gear knob was £100 from BMWMiniParts.

You will struggle to retrofit the OEM DAB as this requires a full DAB equipped CIC system as well as something in the boot, a combox or something like that. Any aftermarket system will be a dashboard / windscreen fitted abomination with associated wiring flopping around the cabin unless you go for a stealth install. BMWs own retrofit system is this type. I don't think they are very good though. My original CCC system had DAB but I got rid of it when I fitted my DAB free CIC system, don't miss it one bit.

LCI cars were from late 2009 and is definitely a mod worth doing as the hard drive based Nav is much better. My car was originally dab equipped and I was lucky enough to find a dab cic system on ebay as it's well worth having in my opinion.
