There are probably more than a few dealers out there that would probably agree sadly!

M5London...any pics of the scabby bits?

Doesn't sound too bad for an old car!

So, go on then, how much were you offered it for?

And did you buy it?

Sounds like someone thought it was worth spending £25 on trying to get an MOT, to then think it bumps the price up by a couple of thousand. Or was it for more honest reasons than that ?
So did you buy ?

Some pics guys :

It was actually offered to me way back in May 2016. But I had just bought my own E30 M3 the month before and also an E34 M5 in the same month, so I my appetite was marginal at that time shall we say.

Apparently it was originally a white car and then repainted.

Late car on K plates. Low £20K's

It has been sold though but I think underneath its looking pretty bad indeed.

Unusual spec M3 with seemingly a good few options. Oxblood interior , cruise, rear opening windows, rear window blind, aircon, sunroof, headlights wipers/washers, electric windows and late enough to be on a K plate. Doesn't seem too much evidence under the bonnet for a respray from white, but hard to tell from the pics. White would be the better colour to return to though if that were the case. Looks all there for it to be a good full strip and rebuild project. Do you know which country the car was originally purchased in ?

Going on the info we have here, I think you did ok. The days of cheap E30 M3 are long gone, unless you're incredibly lucky. Even ex track cars (like my own, which I was warned against buying because no-one wants a track car, let alone a modified one!) make equally strong money nowadays and sell just as quickly.

So what are your plans for it?

I've had a couple of diamond schwartz cars but prefer white myself but I'm sure plenty of folk will love that interior.

Hi Mark,

I didn't actually buy this one. I bought a late 1987 one, diamond black with black leather where I have known the history since the previous owner purchased it in 1997.

I couldn't go for the K plate one as I had just bought the 1987 M3 and also a 1995 E34 M5.

I think it was worth a punt though especially if it was going to be a keeper, and you could therefore justify the rebuild costs over its / your lifetime smile

Yes definitely well specified from the photos.

I was advised it was originally Alpine White with Cardinal Red.

How much would you estimate a full strip down and rebuild to be ? I understand it's a bit of an open ended question though.

CAYManth is probably in a good spot to answer this as he's just had his EVO1 done at ARM BMW down here in Cornwall. Having seen it when it got here I can vouch for the transformation it has gone through. smile

Cheers Mark....so starting with a car which was inspected by a specialist just after I bought it (clean bill of health), passed MOT's with no advisories, looked visually good and managed the 500 mile trip down to Cornwall.......I've just spent £15k (had a budget of £5k!)........repairs to boot area, inner rear wings, number plate area, floors, sills, engine out and repairs to bulkhead, new scuttle, two front wings, full repaint, powder coating of components, repairs to wiring loom, engine strip : new bearings, few leaks fixed, timing chain, ARP bolts, service. Had the engine needed more work or the gearbox been shot, or needed brakes, suspension, tyres, wheel refurbishment, new leather, exhaust, carpet replacement or dash repairs, I could easily see how this could have been nearer £30k. Rough cars are not for the faint-hearted but with the gulf between a rough car and a good one being £20k+, still worth restoring as long as you've got £40k+ or handy with the spanners....

Did you run the Vin to check the details of the car at the time you were offered it ? Would confirm the original colour and spec etc.
It's a bit of an odd one, so few were that late to be a K plate and I've hardly ever seen one that's a Euro car that has Oxblood, aircon, and cruise. I was thinking US spec at first, but can't see any signs it is, so maybe just an odd Euro spec.
Shame its been allowed to get that rusty, but well worth saving as it looks totally complete and the interior looks in good shape. Some of the prices of these project cars that are missing interiors , wheels, and even engines , gearboxes just don't like viable given the money some ask. Ideal project for someone that can strip it down themselves to a bare shell and do things like rebuilding all the suspension and underside, while farming the body and paint out and then basically receiving back a fresh bare shell to refit up at their leisure

I've been through my Evo 2, top to bottom. Costs? £30k plus to do it properly, that's with me doing half the labour for free.

Before the resto the car was MOT'd and driveable. But a bit scabby. Parts costs are scary now, I'm glad I did mine when I did.

That's an incredible amount of work for 15k!

That's what I thought. I went there on Mark's recommendation but despite the 1000 round trip & £500 to get it transported back, I reckon it's has still been more cost effective than having it done elsewhere. I don't know what hourly rate Joe charges but he's worth every penny and nothing phases him & nothing's too much trouble......he had a lot of work to do on the front bulkhead......that's the view from the footwell looking up into the engine bay - thought it was noisy !!!
