Exactly what Mr B said, loads of parts which are OEM are available for a fraction of the cost, some parts like front top mounts even have the BMW roundels ground out by hand as they were all made on the same production line!
That said most parts which are not available via OEM are frankly mental.
Sometimes parts manufacturers grind off the manufacturers mark from parts that measured out of tolerance, and sell them in the aftermarket. You don't know if your front top mounts are the same s pec as bmw ones. The parts will probably be fine, but there is no guarantee that they are OEM spec. That said most parts which are not available via OEM are frankly mental.

Not sure about that, OEM parts specifically match or exceed the 'manufacturers parts' (often manufactured on the same assembly line). Don't think anything which is out of tolerance is boxed for sale.....Rob747 said:

I've worked in the industry, in fact I've actually had a job where I put the parts that didn't meet (the bonkers tight) manufacturers specification in a crate marked "replacement market". There was another bin for parts which didn't meet (what the company thought was reasonable) spec for the aftermarket, that bin was marked "scrap".Kawasicki said:

Interesting, I'd certainly like to know which manufacturer this was and which kinds of parts were affectede21Mark said:
MK alloys look great. I did buy a set but they fouled the rear coil overs.
Cheers !! They do look nice. The previous owner, my cousin , actually sold BBS RS 16" that were on it when it came over from Germany and got these fitted YEARS ago way back in June 1999. I don't think these rub, but I think it isn't on Coilovers but rather just some Bilstein Dampers and matching springs.

Looks tidy.
Thanks !! My cousin did really look after it. He wouldn't sell it to anyone else. Also one of the conditions of the purchase is I have to give him first refusal if I were ever to sell. I doubt I will ever sell it though. Will commence the recommissioning next week.

Are you going to start a 'readers cars' thread to cover recommissioning?

Nice purchase. What needs doing to it ?
Thanks mate !Well it needs full recommissioning. My cousin did 6,000 miles in it himself since 1997 and its been pretty much parked up since 2010. Current mileage is 80,000 miles.
Needs a new windscreen (small crack in it at the bottom left hand side).
It has a rusty sunroof panel, but he has a spare black one in good condition.
It has small bit of rust by a drain hole at the base of the windscreen. He enlarged the drain hole slightly and rust proofed the immediate area, and thankfully the rust hasn't spread anywhere from that area. So need to get that sorted out then painted.
Apart from that it seems pretty nice throughout.
I'll get it running perfectly then correct the cosmetic issues and then just keep it in tip top shape.

They were actually designed for M3's so no, they won't rub with OE type suspension.

OK noted about the suspension and rubbing. Are you going to start a 'readers cars' thread to cover recommissioning?
I am happy to start a readers car thread.
Coincidentally I have also just purchased a 1995, 6 Speed, 3.8L E34 M5 that will need a bit of TLC. But I will start off with the M3 first.
I have an E39 M5 that I have owned since 2008. Its pretty nice and is also supercharged
My daily driver is an F06 M6 Gran Coupe that I bought new in December 2015.
A few of the usual rust spots then. How do the floor pans look around where it meets the bulkhead and A posts ? Having one M car project is bad enough for the wallet , but two ???? Lets hope you are on friendly terms with the guy on the parts counter. They do make a great pairing though, I'm jealous.

The floorplans look pretty good throughout. I have a quite a few photos that I will put in a new thread. Thanks and lets see how I get on with both of them. The priority is getting the M3 up and running first though.
I think this must fall into the more money than sense category.
