I also have this dilemma. I've owned a 2001 6MT Oxford green E46 M3 and a lower mileage 2002 Silver 6MT version. Bothe were great cars. I'm now on an E36 3.0 M3 which I'm keeping for track days. Now on the look out for another daily and I'm seriously tempted by another E46 or a 996 turbo. The problem is the 996 turbo is quite a bit more expensive. The E46 M3 really is the performance car bargain!

You can have 911 turbo beating performance with a charged e46 for less + a better look imo. And you can fit a mountain bike in the back smile

I have the e36 3.2 evo for trackdays and its wicked smile

I have always wanted a 911 tbh. But the cost, reliability, 996 looks, reported lack of reliability always keeps me with the m.

When 997 911 gen ii PDK's come into the 20's i might though.

996 turbo is pretty bullet proof to be fair, does not suffer from the n/a engine problems as it's a much much better engine. Love mine, totally different proposition to an M3. Saying that I bought my charged' M3 on a bit of a whim really as a mate was selling his, I think the best description I have heard about it is "angry"! Really changes the car from being an excellent all rounder that (IMHO) lacked a bit of power to a pretty serious weapon that can get you into trouble if you are not careful! The wet weather handling is especially "interesting" when it's lighting up In 4th gear... smile

Have you bought your kit yet?

Haha, had my charged M3 out in the rain for the first time in ages yesterday…….I had forgotten just how careful you need to be…even in a straight line.

Since selling mine a month ago, i've really struggled with what to replace it with. It had to go due to a change in circumstances.
I've ended up buying an old golf tdi to run round in for a few months til my situation improves
A bit of a come down but needs must. Given the chance, i'll be back in an e46 m3 like a shot!! Great cars
