What follows an E46 M3?
Discussion
I're realised I've become a cynical, miserable old sod, but anyhow...
I recently read that 996s don't come with an LSD as standard, which is thoroughly disappointing, thus the 996 is definitely off my list unless it's a GT3 or RS.
As for the C63, it has a nice engine, but the gearbox would ruin it for me.

We both seem to see cars very similarly and I adore the C63 for its engine, noise and brutish appeal but I think I would struggle with the gearbox as well, a LSD is such an important component too as far as I am concerned and it surprises me that 911`s aren't all fitted with them. I wouldn't bother changing, really regret getting rid of mine (04 smg with KW V3), for the money they can't be beaten, unless it is a toy in which case go the whole hog and buy a caterham!
I'm intrigued as to what a "KW V3" is, and whether it is worth fitting to my E46 M3?Cheers,
Steve
Been lucky to have owned a few performance cars and the E46 M3 sits at the top of my list. Not my daily driver and is used mainly for weekends now but BMW really did hit the sweet spot with that car.
As replacements go I would look at the following:
- M135i (manual). I have an 8 speed auto as my daily driver, but think the manual would be closer to replicating the driver involvement in the M3.
- M235i (manual)
- C63
- E9x M3
- New M3 / M4
- Porsche 997 C4S, Turbo
Having just seen the new M3 in the flesh at my local dealer I think I might be tempted once some decent offers become available next year.

I had five years in an e46 M3 and a CSL then bought an E60 M5, that lasted for four years until someone wrote it off, I've now got an E61 M5 but if I had 15k laying around for a weekend car I'd have a mint Phoenix Yellow cab in a heartbeat, 30k and I'd have another CSL. I've looked at lots of other performance cars over the years and for me nothing matches the all round ability and value of the last decade's Ms'

All this C63 talk has resulted in me booking an appointment with my local merc dealer to view the coupe version (I'm only really interested in the saloon).
So yh... Thanks lol
If your going to have 4 doors then it has to be an estate. They are so much cooler then a saloon. So yh... Thanks lol

How does 550bhp sound? Turns the car into an utter animal, but well behaved when you are not "on it"...
If you want a ride out in mine I'm midlands based

I had mine for 9 years I honestly don't think there is a better all rounder. I test drove the E92 a couple of times thinking it would be a logical replacement but it wasnt as fun to drive and was no quicker either. I did want to get something quicker though so bought a GTR. It's night and day faster as a performance car but is only brilliant at being a performance car. When it's time to be a refined comfortable cruiser it's nowhere close to the M3. I really couldn't name a better car and with second hand prices where they are now they are an absolute bargain. If a 997 carrera wasnt so ugly I think it would offer similar all round quality/performance as an M3 but I couldn't live with the looks personally.

I would have thought CSL or 996 GT3.
No one has mentioned an Exige. Too impractical?
Yep, if you are used to an M3, an Exige/Elise is a step too far unless you really don't need the practicality. No one has mentioned an Exige. Too impractical?
For me, the M3 is a great all-rounder. Whilst it is not brilliant at anything in particular, it scores well across the board and is a lovely everyday machine. Hard to know what would beat it as a one car to do eveything.
