The super charger route sounds interesting. However the best bit of the car is the CSL airbox, wouldnt want to loose that.

997 c2s Gen II in a couple years (when 20kish) might be worthwhile.

Got to be worth losing for 200Bhp gain?! Where in the country are you?

Best bit of the car is the carbon air box? Really?

Supercharger is far more impressive.

Last thing the E46 M3 needs is a supercharger. Completely spoils the specialness of it. It's an amazing engine which was never intended to be forced induction. It's perfectly balanced as a 340bhp car, leave well alone. Will eventually lead to reliability issues and I don't think the rear subframe wants to contend with an extra 200bhp

I think thats very subjective. A supercharger would make it feel much more special to me and i`m sure plenty of others.

Where? On paper? The track? The road?

Seems a shame to supercharge a CSL to me. Widely regarded as being one of the best normally aspirated production engines.

If you want more power there are plenty of more powerful cars to choose from out of the box.

Each to their own though.

I didn`t see anyone talking about supercharging a CSL. A rare car which will become a classic indeed would be a shame to see many/any modifications but the non-CSL e46 M3 is quite a common car and an extra 150bhp or so would make for quite an animal if it is what someone desired of their own car.

My bad. I thought as we were talking about carbon airboxes the thread had moved onto CSLs.

i often thought the same when i had mine. As an all rounder it really is superb. However that is where my changes were. I bought a commuting/biking vehicle which means i no longer needed a car that can do everything brilliantly (which the E46 M3 does) but one that is just for driving for driving fun. So ended up with a S2 elise.

If I needed a replacement equal or better than the E46 M3 was all rounder, its a bloody hard call without spending significant sums.

However, even if you do spend significant sums, the world has moved on and all the electronics are integrated with each other, so as an example you now can't have cruise on with DSC off. That's just another irritating fault of the newer models.

At the time I purchased my M3 it was the most expensive car I had ever bought, subsequently I have spent a small fortune on it and it is now very much a second car. I considered trading up to a 997 last year but it would need to be a gen2 and the cost to change is huge as a result and I wouldn't get much more out of the car. I also considered an f355 but think I have missed the boat on these looking at prices.

Love the looks of the E46 and it's semi practicality. The noise mine makes now is vastly improved with the 6 branch manifold and upgraded back box. There are a ton of faster cars out there but power isn't everything and I will keep it until I no longer enjoy it.

I spent ages saving for a replacement to my M3.

So far I've driven a C63 and XKR and the C63 would tick the box but the tank range is woeful and I'd be filling up twice a week.

I really don't know where to go, XFR, Comp pack E92, 997 PDK? or something classic to run alongside, 993, Alfa GT?

Stumped.

Yup, that's the tricky one. I'd drive away in a C63 right now but to spend all my savings and put up with worse fuel economy/range seems like madness. XKR is very very quick but felt disconnected in comparison to the M3.

An extra £20k for another M3 that some say isn't as good as the E46? I'd need another 10k to start looking at PDK 911s which seem like a logical upgrade from an SMG car.

Now I'm looking at leases which I'd sworn never to do. M135i for 300/month all in at the end of last year, how much for M235i/M4 at the end of this/next year?. Or a 99/month Skoda Citigo and carry on saving for something special for the weekends.

It's all madness.

thank god there is another crazy person out there like me. smile

Why didnt bmw put the bloody v10 into something sporty instead of that abortion of a 6 series. On paper the m6 has it (on a paper without pictures i mean).

One of my friends had an e46 m3 and then an e90 m3 and then a c63 coupe - brand new. After 4 weeks he got rid of the c63 because he said it was rubbish. Sounds great but cannot get the power down at all. He said he would never have another amg - ever.

I own a supercharged e46 m3 and a standard one which has just had the evolve carbon airbox fitted so I thought I may chip in here. A supercharger won't ruin the drive, it makes for an insane car. The noise from a carbon box is much much better than the noise from the supercharged one. Depends what you want but personally I see anything above 400 bhp as wasted on public roads. I don't think you would regret supercharging an M3. It feels like the normal car but dialed up to 11. My 475 bhp supercharged m3 is for sale if you fancy a test drive. wink
