Why is their such a different sound from the CSL box? Is it a different shape/capacity?

I'm no expert but comparing my standard box to the carbon one the standard system is very heavy and is probably designed to deaden the sound as I suspect it would be a bit much for the majority of people. The carbon airbox is VERY loud with a WOT (very funny watching people's heads whip round as it now sounds like a V8 race car). I also gained an extra 30 bhp which is a massive gain on these engines.

The evolve box I have fitted apparently took years to develop and get the noise right.

I expect it is a combination of opening the intake (so you hear the air going in), thinner material which also lessens the sound deadening and possibly some resonance in the material itself. Mostly the two former ones I would expect.

Yup, that's the tricky one. I'd drive away in a C63 right now but to spend all my savings and put up with worse fuel economy/range seems like madness. XKR is very very quick but felt disconnected in comparison to the M3.

An extra £20k for another M3 that some say isn't as good as the E46? I'd need another 10k to start looking at PDK 911s which seem like a logical upgrade from an SMG car.

Now I'm looking at leases which I'd sworn never to do. M135i for 300/month all in at the end of last year, how much for M235i/M4 at the end of this/next year?. Or a 99/month Skoda Citigo and carry on saving for something special for the weekends.

It's all madness.
thank god there is another crazy person out there like me. smile

Why didnt bmw put the bloody v10 into something sporty instead of that abortion of a 6 series. On paper the m6 has it (on a paper without pictures i mean).
It can be done... What a noise!

Well, with all this love for the E46 M3 you'd think they would be easy to sell! I'm struggling to sell my 42k miler for £12k despite lots of views... Maybe it's due to my poor advertising skills!! laugh

I have a 996 turbo, the difference between the 911 & the others is that it is a sports car from the ground up, rather than a saloon with a hot engine.... It's a pretty epic road car to be honest standard, way quicker than the paper stats show, and a very special drive. Porsche bores will say the GT3 is better, which for a track orientated car is undoubtedly true, the turbo is a real weapon on the road, any road, any weather.

The only real problem is that it's a bit TOO easy to go fast, and it's not playful like an M3, it's more about picking the fastest lines & using the huge midrange to fire you from corner to corner. Just as there isn't much to touch the 46 M3 in the 10k range, 25k ish budget makes the 996 turbo almost impossible to ignore IMHO.

That was always my bug bear with my V8 M3...once a 3 series always a 3 series and no matter what engine you put in it or how sexy the spoilers and skirts are its still based on a saloon car and that's why its very hard to truly respect them even though the model they are based on is very competent, so I understand where you are coming from.

For me, the following are great cars, but all of them have pitfalls for me, sheerly down to:
e60 m5 m6 - too heavy
e90 m3 - irritating electronics (I must get better at coding BMWs)
c63 - Automatic. Ergo, in the wrong gear almost all the time. Plus LSDs were only an option I believe.
996 turbo - Less practical, less opportunity to power-slide.

How about an evora. Not as practical but everything else is good. Even supposed to be a surprisingly comfy cruiser when required.

Both lovely head turners and sound great plus they give a very involving and rewarding driving experience, you do have to be a little open minded and have a good sense of humour with a TVR but I certainly think its worth it and I will get another in the future for sure.

After my Cerbera I had a Z4M and a E92 M3 and neither car got close to how the TVR feels in terms of enjoyment and excitement for me personally and although I found the Z4M/M3 very dull most of the time in comparison you do get the piece of mind with a BMW in terms of reliability.

I think perhaps Vantage is the only route to replace e46 m3.

What about slk 55amg? 355 bhp v8. tunable to 390 and 1500 kg.
