wish list
v8 v10 or v12
aurally epic
light and nimble (sub 1500kg)
stunning / sports car looks
nice inside (no elise)
relatively modern (ideally 2007+ or 2000+ for an epic)

Not many cars that equal and i think they are mostly ferrari which are sadly out of budget!

on paper the slk 55 amg sounds good, well in budget too at 16k. however reviews say the tcs and gearbox make it st on the twisties. I want something to hoon through the alps in, as well as get me there in style.

A cayman S sounds good if it had 360 bhp. That however is called a 911 which adds another 8k onto the price.

My old car, a bargain considering the the work/money that Windsor has put into it;

In the same boat as you. Sold mine yesterday. I have a Cerbera and would not use it every day. Handbrake is hopeless so unless you live in Lincolnshire on the fens with no hills, its a pain. And they leak like sieves....dont like the rain and try to kill you....spin
It does tick most of your other boxes though but unless you are handy with the spanners, might find the C63 to be as cheap to run!
I too am struggling to replace the M3 and so far considered an Exige S, Westfield with 300 bhp, Mitsu Evo 9 FQ360 (FQ400 too hard core for me I think). Depreciation on a GTR, C63, XKR etc may be too much?
For looks, can't beat the Vantage imo.

Chaps,

Im now 5 years into a very happy e46 m3 ownership (csl airbox and 356mm bbk ftw).

Wondering what all those who left this car behind went for and how it compared?

Have to admit C63 sounds tempting!
I moved on from a 2004 M3 Manual to a 2007 AM Vantage almost 3 years ago, in many respects it's felt like a natural step forward. Similar meaty controls: gear change and steering primarily, the AM clutch is a little lighter in use I found.

Where it moves the game on for me is the ability to enjoy at almost any speed, the noise and the feel of the car present and correct at 30mph - something I found I had to go rather quickly for in the M3.

For me it's been a perfect daily drive, with only runs to the tip being left to a more practical motor. If you need 4 seats, then the C63 could tick many boxes for you.

I've been following this post with interest because i sold my E46 M3 last year after being a bit paranoid of the SMG gearbox and the normal boot floor issues. I also really fancied a 911 but the irony is that it's paranoia that is now keeping me from buying a 997 because of the apparent engine issues on the Gen 1 cars. My budget doesn't really stretch to a Gen 2 car where the 911 engine issues don't appear to be a problem and it's left me thinking why did i ever sell the M3. There has been alot of sense talked on this post about the alternatives and the E90 vs E46 dilemma, so i continue to follow closely.

Good luck with your search OP and if you find the answer let me know!

E46 is a hard act to follow, sold smg cab 18mnths ago for 2000 tuscan, totally different car took some getting used to but totally reliable and love it, then got E86 Z4MC [as well as] again different from E46 and TVR, easier to drive than TVR but quick and lots of fun but build quality not there? Still missed E46 so just bought another and soon as drove it wondered why ever sold previous one. IMHO E46 range best all round car BMW have built, have 330d as well and there is a 320d & 318i in family. Think you will miss your M3 as others have said so tuck it away in garage for highdays and holidays and buy a Z4M!

Its nice to hear you lot going through the same thought process.

Anyway the dilemma is solved for me at least.

Once again ive decided i will be buried in my e46. Although now it will have 550 bhp thanks to ESS smile
