As per the title really. Driving home on Monday evening and the car felt a bit lacklustre. It seemed to lose all power then almost immediately recover. Decided to give it a spirited run on a short dual carriageway near home and then the horrible noises started. Limped the remaining mile or so home and called BMW for recovery.

An hour later they arrived and when the car was moved the engine oil was nicely all over my drive.

New engine being fitted as we speak under warranty. Has anyone else had or heard of this? Car is a Sept 2011 vehicle with 33500 on the clock.

One of the first I've heard of. I'm on the American forum and over there 200k is not uncommon, throttle actuators being the only problem with that engine.

That said if it's mechanical it will fail. Good job on the warranty, the bmw one is fairly fool proof.

Bloody hell you don't hear this very often if ever about the S65, I am glad you are under warranty though, I would have thought it rare for them to let go I have only ever seen one on youtube that let go.

I always thought mine felt lacklustre most of the time so maybe mine was on its way out too!

Yeah funny you say that, about 3/4 years ago I drove a 2009 e90 saloon and thought it was lacklustre, no fizz if that makes sense. I totally discounted v8 m3's after that. Then I saw a good value very low mile 2010 monte carlo for sale at my local bmw garage so thought i'd give it another shot…..it was like a totally different car. Hugely urgent and absolutely maniacal top end bite. Totally sold me and the first n/a engine I'd driven that measured up to my 996tt. Taken it up to 19k miles so far and no regrets. These cars take time to properly explore the handling but I feel I'm starting to get to know it now.

There was no issue with the warranty or even discussion they just sorted it. Few customer service failings for recovering the car and getting it to a dealer ina timely fashion but the rest is good.

Pleased its being sorted without issue for you as it doesn't always go as smooth as that from what you read regards bmw warranty claims.

I have nothing to add other than nice to see you in here too Loon smile

Have to say my 06 E46 has had a couple of niggles (inc new clutch and flywheel fitted) and as an AUC they have dealt with everything without quibble, worth the extra cost compared to an Indy dealer imo

I was keeping the car for the first time in 15 years I'd own a car for more than two years. I'm now browsing Porsche, Merc and Aston for options.

Never heard of a blown S65 engine before, plenty of Porsche ones though.

It's rotten luck but quite rare, even though they are getting it sorted it would spoil the car for me so I understand the thoughts about changing for another car.

Great excuse!

I've never needed an excuse, but would prefer to spend the money on bike racing this next few years. I really can't find a car that I want out there currently.

That was the one example I was thinking of and to be fair with cars and I mean any marque its just luck as to whether you get a good one or not as there are just too many components for them not to go wrong at some stage I think.

Am I right in thinking that it happened with only 2 months of warranty left?

Just under three. I'd extend the warranty anyway so it wouldn't have been a problem.

For the numbers produced worldwide, still pretty rare and that's before you factor out the ones that have been tinkered with in the states.
