Morning all!

My car is in for an oil and filter service.

Also asked them to check out the front right wheel/suspension.....been hearing a clicking sound (like something is caught in the spokes as they turn), only on left turns....seems to get louder at speed.

Dealer has heard the noise (more noticeable from the outside), but can find nothing wrong.

Anyone got any ideas?

My LCI M5 delivered September 1st 2013 has had NO such noises.
You need to take it to a GOOD BMW dealership to find the problem.

Thank you so much for this, I was beginning to think I was going mad.

My car is at Elms, Cambridge because of their good reputation with M cars.

I'm rather disappointed that they, apparently, can't hear the sound (I heard it straight away when I moved my car five yards on their premises yesterday)

I sensed something funny was going on, now I know why.

I owe you a drink John.

No problem, I have been into "Elms" and they seem ok, show them there are problems in this area, it will spur them into action, if not try "Listers Kings Lynn" PM me if you are going to them and I will give Richard (Head technician) the heads up and what to look for. J

Yep I'd say bearing. Had one go recently on my 09. E89

Tick tick tick on left turns.

I believe the hub wheel bearing is the same across all F10 models from 520d to M5. This was certainly the case with the E60 models.

The OE numbers might be different but chances are they are one and the same.

It's not this.

I had the same problem last month.

They took the brake caliper apart then put it back together again.

Problem solved.

It's due back soon to have a paddle replaced I'll try to ask exactly what they did.

Really? I'd have been surprised if the M5's running with the same wheel bearings as a 520d & rest of the 5 range.

Update....

Elms have just told me that they now hear the noise, but that, according to BMW, it's perfectly normal.

I find this hard to accept, it sounds terrible at times.

I spoke with the Aftersales Manager at Elms.

They will happily change the wheel bearings for me, but they don't think that that would make the slightest bit of difference.

However, a couple of other dealers suggested a bearings fault straight away when I sought their advice.

Elms will raise a technical query with BMW to see if a solution can be found.

Whatever the source of the noise, it is clearly unacceptable on any car, never mind such an expensive one.

If, as BMW maintain, it's normal, then their normal is simply not good enough.

We'll see what happens.

PS: The brake caliper code changed from March 14....

At maneuvering speed at full left lock I could actually feel the click through the steering wheel, can you?

I've not had occasion to manoeuvre like that, but I'll give it a bash tomorrow when I collect my car, pending the technical request.

Actually, I half take that back regarding the F10 models. They could be exactly the same, but the OE stamp numbers could be different. This list doesn't confirm it.

I collected my car from Elms today....big scratch mark on the passenger seat, passenger footwell full of crap (gravel/toffee bits....not too sure)and with dusty boot marks, car covered in dust, three bird poo splodges (one on the driver's window).....oh and the low fuel warning light on, with a range of 18 miles indicated (the car had been left there a week ago with around a quarter of a tank in it).....they obviously had to test my car endlessly to hear the clicking noise I reported and could make happen in their car park and which was heard initially by one of their guys!!!!!!!!

The irony is that I returned their courtesy car in a cleaner state and with more fuel in it than when I took it.

The courtesy car too was a nightmare.....it needed a litre of oil after I drove it for 10 mins (I offered to fill it when I got home, but was told it was a specialist oil, so I'd have to return the car, all the way back up the M11 to another branch.....to have it filled with the same oil I have in gallons in my garage!!)....fog lamp warning light illuminated on day two, that being the same point that I could not unlock the car with the fob, which appeared to be very temperamental, maybe in need of a new battery......got soaked on Friday when I again could not open the car with the fob....

Still, it was a lovely, enjoyable car to drive.....hybrid 3 series, like a 335i with boost....excellent.

  • Is it me, am I just overly fussy, a pain in the arse, one of those "sell a car, buy a problem"-types? Or is it the case that good, decent service, where we and our cars are treated with respect, is a thing of the past?
I'm pig-sick of the whole BMW experience, I really am.

LISTERS Kings Lynn, they give a great service, wash/clean your car before pick-up.
Know how to treat customers.
Ask for Shaun and mention me (John M M5)
If my car was in that state all hell would brake loose. sorry.

You're right to be livid about this - are they accepting responsibility for the scratch on the seat?
It's amazing how little mechanical curiosity/initiative/knowledge the service departments show and how their hands are tied by BMW when they do dare to come up with a diagnosis which hasn't been given to them by the car's computer. The upshot is that you take the car in, it gets covered in crap and possibly damaged, and they hand it back without any real attempt to solve the problem there and then. Instead, the customer has to come back when BMW decides whether to take you seriously or not. I recently went through this (minus the damage) with my x5.
