I've got a June 2012 car with 13k and would consider a bid of around £41k taking into account the new tyres as being a pretty good shout! If anyone offered me that today I would probably let mine go. Cost me £48k 10 months ago with 5k miles. A car like this is going to depreciate fast no getting away from it.
Tbh you'd pay £35k for an M3 on 11/12 plates... will the M5 at some point be worth less than an equivalent age M3? :/

Gulp.....just bought one today.....wish I'd read this post first!!!

Having said that I paid pretty much rock bottom price for an auc car but it's got 40k on the clock

Anyway if I can drive it for a year and lose a few k then hey oh that's fine by me!

Not sure that £10k is that bad...if you assume the dealer the OP bought from made £4k the trade price has dropped £6k in six months....add in £1k for tyres and the actual depreciation was £5k. If I owned an M5 I'd be budgeting for at least £10k in annual depreciation before taking account of dealer margins.

Unless the car you're trading in is a great spec or they're desperate to sell the car you're buying you automatically have to assume that a dealer is looking to make £5k on a car like an M5.

I too budget for £10K per annum on these things, so the PCP deal on offer last year was just too good to resist.

I'm really enjoying the car and it's just lovely knowing I can just hand it back in two years and walk away (although I'm quite sure I won't).

Leasing has got to be the way.

Other half has a well specd Golf R DSG, with tax, maintenance and tyres included, for £350 a month: how good is that?

Cracking car too, a nice alternative to the M5 (translated, this means I see the R as a fun way of keeping my mileage down!!)

10k in 60 months with shagged tyres is good. My car is with new tyres and lost around the same.

That's just the story with performance cars these days.

The best thing would be to sell privately or through a reputable dealer on a sale or return basis

Deale take the milk on trade in prices.......I've no intention of losing 10k a year on my m5.....max 5k if I play my cards right

Be a struggle to only lose 5K as it will drop more than that in the guides in a year, then the margin the dealer made when they sold you it....I struggle to run a 60\K car for 12 months and not lose, that includes me retailing out of it too

You must be talking second owner depreciation, right?

Then you're bang on the money.

£10k does sound about right. The m5 always depreciates heavily.

I've just passed the 2 year mark in my m5. I doubt I'll get seriously tempted to part with it until the next gen M5 comes along. At the moment, no other super saloon comes close.

Leasing might be the way, but then you don't have the choice at the end of the term; or are you offered the car once the lease terminates?

You can usually buy the car if you agree a price, or extend the lease. Or better still, take a new car.

Trouble with leasing is that you are tied in for the term of a contract...no good for a serial car changer like myself!

Unless it's a car you can live with, but I get your dilemma, though now I'm gathering tray hairs it bothers me less, but I have lost fortunes on cars I got bored with! I reckon I can get into an M5 on PCH with around 4k worth of options for a total outlay of £31k over 3 years, which compares favourably to PCP which would cost around 39k with a buy it figure of 32k. There is a lot to be said for handing the keys back when you're done.

I've only had a 997 out of your list and I'm not disappointed, that is unless you expect it to be a GT3 wink

I'm still amazed at just how quickly it picks up speed and given the opportunity it absolutely flies and makes other quick cars look slow. Personally I never drive with all the aids off, I'm not that good so I'm happy with the car being in control and I respect the laws of physics with regard to corners etc. I don't find the car too intrusive but would say the traction light is on more often than I would expect. With winters you can't floor it at all, the light is like a flashing Christmas tree light hehe

As a car it tends to get admiring glances rather than 'wker' (which both my 911's got) and I'm not afraid to park it anywhere knowing most people won't have a clue what it is. I think the shape is lovely and the 'stance' is pure muscle.

From reading on the net I suspect one element you won't be disappointed with is the gearbox - I suspect lightyears away from the E60 SMG (albeit I've not driven an E60 M5) and brilliant either in comfort of mode 3 (not as many choices as you had in your E60/92). I don't think even in mode 3 it's back breaking but is super quick and I always feel as if I'm in control rather than the other way around.

On the whole I love the car - I'm averaging 18mpg and driving as I do I'm more than happy with that.

8500 miles and 8 months into my 3 year contract, there is only one question - will BMW offer the car at a cost I'm prepared to buy at and if not where the fk do I go from an F10 M5 scratchchin
