Put deposit on a car with bmw...is it refundable?
Discussion
As above.....placed deposit on an m5....now getting cold feet and insurance renewal also proving to be problematic
I only put the deposit of £1k on friday evening, and insyrance quotes due to the postcode rating are proving to be prohibitive
I paid deposit via debit card rather than credit card
Will bmw return the deposit or have I just lost £1k by making a hasty decision
Please advise

If you ask nicely, you may well get it refunded. I had a deposit on a secondhand e60 m5 refunded in 2010 - a bit of further investigation via another dealer had revealed that the car had been a press car and I didn't fancy taking the risk (though I didn't need to mention that in order to get my deposit back). Good luck.
They can say no, but normally don't so you should be fine. Just be really nice about it.
The only case ive known where they said no was when i had a new build Q7 on order earlier this year. Paid £2k deposit based on dealers really attractive finance deal and we went home. When we got home the wife (director at accountancy firm) read over the notes and found that the figures didnt add up. Instead of telling us the actual interest rates the salesman adjusted his wording to tell us the rates were 'X% of the Audi base rate' and blah blah blah. The figures still werent that terrible but out of principle we withdrew the order only a couple of hours after placing it.
Even though the car had not even been processed the salesman said we could not have our £2k back and would require a better reason for the change of mind. A quick chat with his boss and an admission of tarting up the figures by the salesman soon got us our deposit back. But, looking at the print they didnt have to!

If you placed your deposit over the phone without viewing the car the distance sellings regs do apply so you can get your deposit back. I would still ask nicely though and only mention distance sellings regs if you encounter a barrier.
If you have looked at the car in the flesh then they do not have to give you it back. Some dealers will, some won't.
