Hi,

I've got an E92 2010 car with 40,000 miles on it.

In the last month or so I've noticed what I think is slight clutch slip. When I pull off from cold I change gear manually (as it does like to hold the revs in auto) & when in second gear & accelerating gently the revs rise but the speed doesn't.....then after a few seconds it seems to sort itself out & drives as normal. It only seems to happen when starting from cold.

I went out in it last night & it did the above, but then on 2 separate occasions I noticed a judder from the clutch when pulling off in first.

I have to admit I analyse every slight noise etc from the car so I'm wondering if I'm being over fussy? I don't know a lot about the DCT but do understand it's a wet clutch system so doesn't wear like a normal clutch?....so at 40,000 miles it should be ok?

I have 6 months left on a AUC warranty so I'm thinking I'll just call them & I guess they'll book it in. Just wondering what other people's opinions/experiences might be?

Thanks muchly.
Ben

Have you used the launch control? If so a lot of times? Or just a few? That will be the first data they pull from the car before they look at doing any work. I had a clutch done on a DCT box'd M3 after 43k. Was slipping slightly. They said the saving grace was launch had never been used on the car in it's ownership. I think that's an area they will be most interested in. My clutch was done without any quibble and I had an X5M given to me to smoke about in.

Never used the launch control in the 6 months I've had the car, that's not to say it wasn't used in the past I suppose. I think I'll just call & get it booked in then....& request the X5M courtesy car too haha!
Thanks for the reply.

I've done 38k in mine and used launched control a few times but I have no slipping, take it in and see if they can measure the clutch wear perhaps get them to tell you how many times its been launched.

Booked in for tomorrow! Will report back on what the outcome is.

A good shout re. asking if they can tell what wear is on the clutch & the times it's been launched....or perhaps I don't want to know that bit!

If it has not been launched under your ownership then they cannot get away with any excuses really. The car should have been prepped to AUC (argue that point) and if it slipped through the net then it is their problem.

Book it in and let the experts sort it. Launching doesn't matter as long as you are under AUC warranty otherwise it gets VERY expensive. I wouldn't own any M car without warranty.

Cheers for the advice guys, all taken onboard for when I take it in tomorrow. I will report back. I have to say that all dealings with the dealer have been really good so far....haven't been talking about anything so potentially expensive yet though!

Update for anyone who's interested (a bit boring I'm afraid)....

They've had the car this morning & done an 8 mile test drive, they can't find any faults. It doesn't really surprise me as it didn't do either symptom this morning on the way there.

I asked if they can tell about clutch wear & they said they can't without removing the clutch, which sounds fair enough but I don't know.

Anyway, they've said to take it back if it does it again. I probably won't bother unless it gets much worse as it will probably be another waste of time. I suppose at least the fault has been 'logged'.

Cheers for the advice.

Ben, it sometimes surprises my how long it takes for my car to move off when pulling away in 1st when cold. Sometimes it's instant, other times it takes a while. I have also noticed an intermittent minor judder when taking off in 1st when the car is cold. Mine is Sept 09 with 28K miles, have owned for over 2 years. I put it down to characteristics of the vehicle.

You're covered with the AUC warranty so wouldn't worry. I'd purchase the BMW Insured Warranty when the AUC expires for peace of mind. These cars are generally reliable but if something does go wrong it's likely to be relatively expensive.

Thanks for the re-assurance!

It sounds like mine is doing exactly the same. I am always a bit of a pessimist so fear the worst!

I do plan on taking out the warranty when this one runs out. From what I've read they do seem pretty reliable but you can never be too sure.

To the OP, get them to put the latest DCT software on the car 240e IIRC, there is a thread on M3 cutters about it if you have a 2010 you'll benefit.

Thanks for that, just had a search on M3 Cutters & have found a few threads re. the software update. Will give the dealer a call back in a few days & tell them the issues are still the same (which I'm sure they will be) & suggest the software update & see what they say.

Just got my first m3 with dct and in the morning when cold it's pretty rough and lazy. I have found most BMW autos to be exactly the same so I wouldn't worry to much about it especially if it's not present and full operating temp.

As for warrant and general comments about a car being reliable I have learnt the hard way but was fortunate to has extended warranty so will always have this from now on. If you are interested we has a car from nearly new, serviced on time with main dealer etc etc it had 60k miles on it went out one afternoon turned the key and it literally ate its engine. Thousands of pounds later i will always have a warranty for that peace of mind

I think it is probably a combination of my lack of experience of DCT & also me worrying too much! I will still ask about the software update as that sounds worth while.

Stories like that definitely re-emphasize the importance of a warranty. Would not like to even guess the cost of a new engine or gearbox.

Is a clutch not normally covered under warranty? If you launched it a load of times would it make the warranty invalid with regards to the clutch? How much would it be to replace a clutch?

Very expensive!

The DCT box has quite a bit of "character" whilst slip shouldn't happen, judder in 1st will on occasion, it's also slow to react to first-reverse and vice versa.

The 2012 software will sort out any issues around hesitation when you slow down and then set off (a roundabout for example) and crispen up the shifts.

One thing I learnt about the box is if you're in manual mode in a high gear and want to over take you can push the pedal to the floor then pull the left hand paddle and it will kick down into the lowest gear jumping from 7th to 2nd instantly if need be, quite a neat trick.

If I wasn't selling mine I'd also have the GTS software uploaded as well.
