Haven't had a chance to report back until now. My car went into a BMW dealer about ten days ago and they were able to replicate the problem. They cleaned the pads and the discs but the squealing persisted so they then replaced the pads and all has been well since. I've done about 300 miles and not a squeak. Let's hope that's the cure.

Oh no! It's back again. No noise at all for the first 2000 odd miles since the pads were replaced but it came back a few days ago and been getting steadily worse for the last 1000 miles. I'm on a long road trip in Europe at the moment hence the big miles over the last couple of weeks. I guess all I can do is take it back to a BMW dealer when I get back to the UK and ask them to look at it as the pad replacement hasn't fixed the problem. Anyone else got any further with this very annoying issue?

yep, I have the same issue......noise is back after around 300 miles of new pads, so a bit sooner.

They also told me that not 1 single complaint has gone into BMW technical about M5 brakes squealing. fking liars.

And the worst part is they wanted to charge me for new pads and disks all round because apparently the squealing was down to my 'driving style'. Again, fking liars and fking thieves. Stuff like this really annoys me because it is so blatant and lazy and designed to rip people off.

Anyway, I explained that the noise had been there since the car was delivered brand new off the transporter and had been reported to my supplying dealer. And that all the notes were on the account for all to see. So they gave up trying to get money and attempted to sort the issue......without success. It is going back tomorrow again.

Very annoying.

Get the brake discs on a brake lathe and 're-cut' by 1mm or so. There may be a run-out issue meaning the brake disc isn't properly uniform all the way around hence the squeakiness.

Better paying £40 a corner than £2000 all around, just for peace of mind.

Thanks. I will put that to them tomorrow and let you know what they say.

All this is agreed under warranty now, thankfully, but last time they took 6 days to get the car back to me.....painful.

Skimming the disks is NOT an option, if they are running out of true (can be checked with a dial gauge) they need replacing.

I don't know if they'd be willing to use their brake lathe (if they have one) on your F10. Their objective is maximum ££££.

The only time they will use it is in their AUC car preparation, they'll skin the disc to make it look new and tell the customer "yes sir, new brake discs and pads all around sir, look at how shiny they are sir"

Try and find a local independent garage who will have a brake lathe, or even another dealership like Toyota, Nissan or anyone who makes 4x4 cars. BMW might be unwilling to help in this whereas someone else will welcome the business IMO.

Removing and skimming disks is a labour intensive job, BMW dealerships will not entertain it.
Just replace parts.

You can do it while the brakes are still on the car now;

Obviously, if the discs are at minimum thickness, there is no point cutting the surface. However, if new discs are vibrating, it may just be worth doing it.

Mine was in for a regular service yesterday and I asked about the squealing brakes. I was told that this is a known issue with no known solution at the moment, but (and this may be BS, but is what I was told) BMW has commissioned Brembo to develop new callipers and disks which will be fitted as new brakes are required for cars.

Personally, I cant see BMW investing in revised brakes for a model which has ben out for 3 years, but we will have to wait and see...

Hi

would you be kind enough to tell me who said that about the know issue? PM if you prefer.

Thanks,

I had this issue 2000 miles ago when the car was on 6,000 miles. I was told on a US forum to spray alloy wheel cleaner onto them, leave for 5 mins and then hose off.

Did it once and it went away for a week, did it a 2nd time when I was washing the car and they haven't squealed since. Give it a try, cheap fix and it works, I use meguiars hot rim alloy wheel cleaner.

My M6 had brake squeal from the day I got it. After a couple thousand miles waiting to see if it improved with use, I sent it back to the dealer where they "deglazed and lubricated" the brakes (under warranty).
Having followed the PH forum posts about the recurring F10/12/13M brake squeal I didn't expect this to cure the problem but it's been a few months now and so far so good! Fingers crossed it stays that way!

I don't think mine have made any noise whatsoever.

However, I do use them (and hard) and I do get fade if I'm enjoying myself.

Just noticed another thread starting about this, so I thought I'd update this thread to say that my brakes haven't squealed since my last post nine months ago and another 7,000 miles. Replacing the pads did do the trick.
