Hi,

I know this subject has been discussed before but I can't find an answer that works for me, so I'm hoping some other drivers might be able to guide me.

My M5 has started to squeal quite loudly when I'm braking from speeds of about 15mph down to a complete stop. It happens most often at junctions and traffic lights, etc. and it doesn't happen consistently - sometimes it goes away for a day or two, other times it happens consistently for an hour or so, other times it comes and goes within one ten minute journey. I followed the advice of a few posters on here and braked quite hard from about 70mph down to a stop about five or six times in an effort to clear any rust off the discs, but that hasn't helped at all.

It does seem to happen most often after I've been pushing the car quite hard, but not always. Sometimes it just happens when I'm toodling about the town. I've read that this can be a feature of 'performance cars' but I've never experienced it before with previous M cars and a 997.

Anyone got any ideas before I take it in for an inspection by BMW (who I am almost sure will not be able to replicate the issue)?

Thanks.

I'm pretty it's a standard feature simply because they are so quiet (unless you're in the car where you get the V8 noise pipe in) because it's the only way you'll get any glances at lights wink

I've been told blasting the discs with a power hose does the trick....

I've tried that too with no joy, unfortunately.

You need to do it 3 times.

Oddly enough mine has just started doing it, although it may just be a case of i've only just spotted it.

At low speed (was stuck in numerous traffic jams yesterday) with the windows open, the braking from say 10/20mph to stop was a bit squeaky. Not loud but defo noticeable. All the drill holes were cleared following my track day on Anglesey Circuit so it's not that.

You couldn't miss it when it happens on my car. It's loud and very annoying but it only started about a month ago. The car is now eleven months old with about 5k miles. The local dealer is talking about taking the discs and pads off and cleaning them, but I don't want to pay for that. The problem with anything brake-related is that warranty cover can come into question.

My car has also started making the dreaded squeal for the past few months - it was fine for the first 18 months or so. It is very loud and seems to happen when the car has been driven for about 20-30 minutes. The squealing happens when braking at low speed, in the range approximately 10-15mph down to zero.

The brakes were properly bedded in and, as I say, were fine for a long time. My pattern of usage hasn't changed at all i.e. approx. mostly town driving with some motorway driving.

I had a similar issue with my TVR and I recall them saying that they had put some grease around the calipers to get rid of it.

My workaround, to minimise the squeal, is to brake very, very lightly for the last couple of mph or so. It's pretty crap having to do this tho', as you can imagine.

There actually doesn't seem to be any fix, though I haven't been able to tell whether it mostly happens with cars which do a lot of town driving and therefore build up a lot of brake dust very quickly after cleaning the car.

Mine is 10 months old and 6k in, it happened almost straight away, the dealer took them apart and de glazed the disks. It was ok for a few thousand miles thena it returned again.

My M5 has been in three times for this problem.
I eventually took it to another dealer who was going to charge the first dealer to correct the problem.
Miraculously the original dealer now claims it is a known fault and can be corrected by new parts supplied and fitted FOC by BMW if they make a "PUMA" claim.
I'll keep you posted.

Did they tell you which parts will need to be fitted?

Will watch this thread with interestsmile

Please confirm what parts are replaced once done? If mine gets worse it will most certainly be going into the dealers for resolution as I hate creaks & squeaks.

It's the hot weather causing it, stripped and cleaned mine 2 weeks ago and was back doing it again after a couple of day

He did mention the parts but at the time I was was so furious that I wasn't listening properly, as he had denied to the second dealer that my car had ever been in for a brake problem before.
What I do remember through the red mist was the manager at the original dealer saying he currently had two cars in for which the claim had been agreed and he was just waiting for the parts to come in.
I now have my car back while the PUMA claim is being raised, I'll give them a few days and call to see what's happening.

Car went into original dealer, Spires of Borehamwood today and they replaced the brake pads.
This is apparently a new fix to cure the known problem, they said it wasn't on the PUMA system when the car went in previously in May.
I've only driven it about sixty miles home and the brakes didn't squeal.
Only time will tell.

Snow foam the whole car brakes and all, then after 4/5 mins, jet wash the brakes and disks, it works for me, never had a squeal ever.

Haven't had a chance to report back until now. My car went into a BMW dealer about ten days ago and they were able to replicate the problem. They cleaned the pads and the discs but the squealing persisted so they then replaced the pads and all has been well since. I've done about 300 miles and not a squeak. Let's hope that's the cure.

Mine is going in on Monday for the brake squeal to be looked at too.

Some service or booking manager wanted to charge me for an hours labour to ascertain the issue?! The same issue that has been with the car since it was delivered new off a transporter and which was reported to the supplying dealer at the time.

No. I won't be paying anything. Then they wanted to charge £12 to collect and drop off. £12 !! Now I can understand maybe £50 or something significant but £12!?? Just designed to irritate. That was then also reduced to £0.

Anyway. Let's see what happens come Monday.
