Who has paid “big” money for an E36 M3?
Discussion
We all know E36 M3 asking prices are on the rise.
However I had a look on the E36 M3 section of the classifieds today and while there are some large asking prices out there, a lot of the more expensive stock is still around from when I purchased mine at the start of the year.
I don’t need to know the details but has anybody actually purchased recently at say above £6K?
Is the price increase real or just a few car dealers chancing their arm?

For that kind of money I suspect most folks, myself included, would find it difficult to resist the more modern E46 M3.
Depends what you want. I much prefer my E36M3 to the E46M3 I had and the E46 was bought almost new. I think that prices will start to switch as in my eyes the E36 is beginning to become classic whilst the E46 is at the stage where is is starting just to look old. However I think you are correct most people would still at this point in time go for an E46.If only the E36 came with the S54 motor. That would be a great combination.
In answer to the OP I paid around what your threshold is 2 yrs ago for one.

Theyre not rising yet but I think they will in time. Id buy a £6k one if it was manual in Estoril, dakar or techno violet.
There are no good ones kicking about at present in the classifieds imho but I think wait to see what happens price wise in winter.

Thing is most M3s (E36) have high mileages, had possibly high owners, outside main dealer network, and just been abused/not well looked after and modded and all this affects the value
There are definitely some low owner, low mileage, standard, original examples about .... Just a question of finding them
A guy on cutters had his featured in BMW car magazine
M3 Evolution
R Reg
Estoril Blue Metallic Paint
4 previous owners
FBMWSH up until 2011
Then specialists
112k mileage around that
Advertised for £7k
Then he chose to keep
See for sale section on m3 cutters

Yeah no one would pay £7k for a 112k miler when you could have a cheaper e46.There are definitely some low owner, low mileage, standard, original examples about .... Just a question of finding them

I'm likely looking at getting into an M3 in the next year, and had rules out the E36 because I think it looks so dated whereas the E46 still looks quite modern. What did the E36 have in the locker that the E46 didn't?
The thing people forget is the youngest cars are now approaching 17 years in age. Even a car that has done 7k a year will be sitting at 119,000 miles.
Low mileage examples exist but I would always pick a mint 100,000 mile example over a 40,000 mile example as it will likely be better maintained and have the common issues sorted (Vanos, downpipe, rods etc)

I agree. It's frustrating that when I come to sell mine it'll have over 120k on it and that will put people off- but it's only on its third owner and the middle owner put all of those miles on it in a few years trundling up and down motorways whilst servicing it to within an inch of its life. And nearly EVERYTHING that normally needs it has been replaced...Low mileage examples exist but I would always pick a mint 100,000 mile example over a 40,000 mile example as it will likely be better maintained and have the common issues sorted (Vanos, downpipe, rods etc)
I bought a 98 manual Evo Convertible in Dakar earlier in the year and paid over £6K for it......! But it is a one (retired) owner from new,65,000 miles FSH (17stamps) and EVERY invoice Inc the original sales invoice and EVERY MOT from new and totally original... It was advertised on Auto Trader and I managed to agree a deal within an hour of it going on and the lovely old gent was as good as his word and saved it for me but had refused an higher offer from someone else before I picked it up.........! (there are some nice people out there) I'm having some detail work done on it and will have the wheels refurbed but it is a gem which I will keep under wraps with only light use as I do think it will be far better than money in the bank....... it will join the low mileage 840 Sport and ZM Coupe also in Dakar currently under wraps......

That's not the Dakar that had been around for ages with pictures if the tyres in the ad and lots of puff about 'no dreamers' was it?
No..... This was very understated if anything.... I don't think it even said one owner in the add,and I agreed to buy it within an hour of the advert going on.....Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
