Isn't it something to do with pedestrian impact? Eg if you run over a child / midget they have some softer plastic to hit, rather than metal?

EU bullst.
Yes I heard that too... Look at the new MINI it has a huge gap. BMW wouldn't have purposely designed something with the intention of it costing its customers less.

Regards to the 'bling yellow' I quite liked the Aurum Dust colour on the concept car. http://www.rushlane.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08... I wish they hadn't tweaked it.

Huge apology to the guys that rant about the noise these cars make.

Drove my Wifes car last night for 50 mile round trip and it came to me.....under moderate acceleration the car sounds like a 6 pot DIESEL. It has a deep bass which reminds me of an old 320D E class a few years back

sadly you are not the first person to make that comparison. frown

It really boggles my mind, the M135i has a somewhat similar engine but sounds quite decent even though it is all synthetic. I don’t understand how the sound engineers botched the car where sound is arguably most important so badly. Even the i8 3-pot sounds worlds better than the M3/M4.

A part of my hopes there will be a software-update that changes the engine sound completely. Maybe for the facelift. The engine itself is still a beast.

Regarding sounds, the F10 M5 gets stick occasionally but a lot of owners do seem to say it's unfair and it does actually still sound rather good.

With the M3/M4 though, a lot of owners do seem to be repeating what you've just said, unfortunately. I've yet to hear one for myself but my mate at the local dealers says much the same about the noise.

Yes, a quick software update for the augmentation and an aftermarket exhaust would be all thats needed to quash this flaw. Its a small flaw and BMW could argue only us geeks would be bothered!

It's not the exhaust sound....More the engine.

Actually if I'd never experienced a diesel I'd have said it sounds quite nice....BUT I can't get away from thinking it's a diesel

It does fly though...nice car

Depends what you want from a car. I know someone who put on over 100k in seven years. Was looking to buy a second csl that he could keep for the future.

To quote a M engineer over in Munich

Unfortunately the mass buyers want the status of a M car with heated electric seats, TV, etc, etc.

As engineers we are not happy that we cannot develop a proper M3
What kind of an engineer would say that? If you want a "proper" sports car, you don't build it from a saloon to begin with. The reason M cars are desirable to the public is that they are a) expensive b) offer decent but compromised performance and comfort in once package. I can't think of one that isn't built around this ethos.

There's compromise and there's compromise though. Surely you can read between the lines and see what the engineer means?

I'm not talking about the sound coming out of the stereo (which is either very minimal or so well executed that you really don't notice it) but the sound outside - on a cold start it reminds me of Vespa with a hole in the exhaust.
I visited my local dealer on the launch weekend to see (and experience) the M3/M4. My thoughts were "It'll have to be good to get me out of my F10 M5".

Quick chat with the salesman, handed me the keys, started her up from cold...

I know that shouldn't be the basis for my decision but...no...just...no. I couldn't live with that every morning.

Shallow, maybe. But it had to tick all the boxes to make me swap and it failed at the first hurdle.

Too right, if you're spending that kind of money you want a lovely soundtrack.

It really is bad...on Monday when we were selling it back to the dealer, the missus went out and started it in the morning and I just thought to myself 'thank goodness that's going today, I won't have to hear 'that' anymore'. A couple of my neighbours, who know very little about cars have also commented on whether it's 'right'.

And I'm not just going along with the consensus here as I was always one of the first to defend the M5/6 which I think sounds fantastic (from the outside at least) yet tends to get a slating, typically from those who've never heard it.

The M135i that we had immediately before the M3 also sounded infinitely better, at any revs under any conditions. BMW made a decent job making that car sound like a typical BMW straight six should.

I agree. Love mine when I start it up in the garage on a morning except sometimes it has an erratic tickover.

Did you try it in different modes? Apparently in sports+ the exhaust sounds much better than in eco mode. I am wanting to arrange a test drive for myself but the dealer will only give me a 30 min slot and I feel I am going to need a full day before I commit, as sound is important to me.

No, not really. Though perhaps there is some hidden meaning in those italics. hehe

Just because a performance car is based on a saloon / estate / whatever the trendy name for a hatchback is these days doesn't mean that it has to be the polar opposite from a lightweight sports car. The engineer probably meant that he'd rather build something with just enough practicality and "compromise" to be useful as a daily driver yet focussed enough to entertain.

Or you could just give up and throw more power at a Golf. rolleyes

Couple of questions you guys might know the answer to.

Is factory collection available to UK customers?
Is there an option to have the speed limiter removed.? My CSL has this and ive heard it mentioned on some M4 video reviews but dont see anything on the config.

Cheers
