Hi all. I posted a related message along these lines previously when, for a fleeting moment, I was considering selling my 06 plate E46 M3 CS. I feared its 118k miles could mean the engine was not long for this world, so asked if anyone had higher absolute mileage figures. Many did (some much higher), which was good to know.

That earlier discussion dealt with absolute mileage regardless of car age. My car is a May 06 registered unit, so it's clocked up an average of 14,300 miles per year (118k / 8.25 years). I assume this is fairly high.
I'm just interested to know....has anyone else got an M car with a higher average mileage per year figure?

In the time I've owned the car, it's gone through 2 pairs of rear springs, needed a new SMG gear selector and had a faulty brake pressure sensor (so I just replaced both for good measure). Other than that, it's been 33,000 pretty trouble free miles. What are the experiences of others with high average mileage Ms? Conversely, have you had any low mileage 'dogs'?

My March 06 M6 is a little over 158,000 so at an average of 18,600 miles per year. Half a dozen track days too.
I bought in October 2006 at 3,600 miles. So far a warranty VANOS pipe fix at c.40k, clutch and front disks at c.90k, cats at c.140k, other than that just the usual consumables and bits.

interested to see repliessmile

I've seen quite a few E36 M3's on track with 120k + miles and remember reading about a guy with an E36 that was turned into a track car at around 140k miles then the engine died at 170k..

American owners do 200k+ miles I think...

I got mine with 50k and it now has 75 but still feels like a new car.. to me anyway.. I certainly wouldn't expect any engine problems for the life of the car smile

My Z4MC is on 117k at the moment. Being a mid-September 2006 car this means it's average is about 14,800 a year.

However, I bought it at 9k miles when it was 2-and-a-bit years old, and have put on the other 108k over the last 5 years 9 months - averaging about 18,700 miles per year. Would be more, but I was working from home for a fair bit of the first year ;-)

It does the Mon & Thur commute (210 miles each way), track days, and our 2-3 annual Ring trips.

I take the car to a well known local specialist. He said something along the lines of 'the engine tends to let go on the e46 around 100k' a while back. I guess he's seen his fair share, so it isn't total BS.

My CSL is soon to hit 118,000. I wish I'd done all of them. It's had a fair amount of warranty work done in its life though, I'll have a look through and let you know exactly what if you want.

My 2003 M3 is on 138000 miles now. It's an occasional car for me and I put around 6000 miles a year on it, some of those being hard, well enjoyed miles.

Doesn't use a spot of oil, and I plan to keep it for at least another couple of years. I still have complete faith in it, and can't think of anything I could replace it with for similar money.

Maybe you misunderstood him? If M3 engines only lasted 100k we'd hear endless stories confirming this.

In your position I wouldn't be worried. If the engine is using oil, smoking etc then obviously there's a problem but if it sounds good and performs the same absolutely no reasonsmile

My 1988 E30 Evo 2 has 135,000 miles on it, with 125,000 of them done in the first 10 years of its life.

Until I undertook a total restoration the only maintenance it required apart from standard servicing was a replacement fuel pump, a couple of bushes, some diff seals and a rocker cover gasket.

Never had any of my M cars let me down, but they were all below average mileage I think

Sort of…..bought mine last year with 27,000 on the clock (04 plate E46 M3). 18 months later she is sitting at just under 60,000. I've clocked more miles in 18 months than she did in the first 9 years of life.

So you paid top dollar for a low mileage example, then promptly used it (presumably) every day for many miles.

Pray tell,.....why? Tour of europe?

maybe

1. Because it's a car
2. The mileage was hardly low

27k is very low for a 9 year old car.
Doesn't make much sense to me either...

Live near Oxford, work out of Aberdeen. I wanted a nice one. She's no garage queen. They were built to be driven.

My clock is not high, but I think my annual average is pretty good going.

Bought my M6 Convertible new on 24th December 2013, I have done 14,800 miles since then.
