C5 RS6's are brittle beasts. The M5 is just expensive!

C5 RS6's are brittle beasts. The M5 is just expensive!
DUring my last 5 months of ownership, the Plus has had the IC's refurbed, new N75, new rear view mirror and a new gearbox valve body harness.
It now needs a new steering rack and EGT sensor which is probably going to set me back a couple of grand. It would be closer to £3k if I couldn't get the parts cheap.
Eddie, did you have any issues during your M5 ownership such as iDrive failure etc?
I think from a total cost of ownership I might be better off with the c5 rs6 that's sorted... say I keep it for 3 years and assuming I get one that's had the big bills sorted already, then I reckon my running costs will be lower than the depreciation hit on the m5 in addition to any potential bills...
I can get into a sorted rs now for about 10k with rad, brakes, cambelt, water pump etc, tyres, coolers and drc stuff already done but I cant get change from 18k for a pre lci m5
I know the rs might be a little agricultural in comparison to the m5 but I cant resist the allure of that v8...
does that look about right??

Well that's what I thought a sorted car was and I've been stung with a new rack and will be replacing a dodgy EGT sensor and if I was to use MRC (RS specialist), I would be looking at a bill of more than £3k, then if my gearbox decides enough is enough, then that's another £3.5/4K.I can get into a sorted rs now for about 10k with rad, brakes, cambelt, water pump etc, tyres, coolers and drc stuff already done but I cant get change from 18k for a pre lci m5

The alternator is also a common failure but can be done as a DIY and the ABS pump has also been know to let go.
These are things that have plagued most C5 owners, just check out RS246 for evidence etc.
I don't want to put you off but these monsters can literally haemorrhage money but when they're running well, they can be awesome.
I absolutely love the sound of the V8 and the way it pulls is addictive but I really miss the E60's quality interior.
If you're thinking of a saloon, you can pick up a pre-lci for around 15-16k without stupid miles but if you're talking about a touring which are all LCI FYI
then yes, you won't find one for less than 18 g's.
I had a C5 RS6 as well, the first service i had it in for cost me £3k in just basic stuff and then a few thousand miles later the gearbox was on it's way out. All those Audi's RS6's from that era were badly built on the mechanical side of things and it's a constant case of changing parts out and listening out for the next problem. The inteiro is very dated now as well.
The E60/E61 on the other hand is a great drive, much more upto date and both of mine have cost nothing more than general service items. Mine just had the 'big' one at 60k which cost £750 at a main dealer.
You'd have way more fun in the BMW and less cost.

yep the more I look into it its almost impossible to find one car that's had all the bits tended to which does present me with a potentially crippling liability that makes a 10k car easily a 3k car because of what I need to do to fix it...
im still looking though and am wondering whether the 550i touring might be the compromise because the m5 touring will def be out of reach at 18k

I really like the v10 m5 and was looking for an e61 m5 but really struggled to find one with nice spec and colour scheme, ended up with a c6 rs6 which is much, much faster but less "fun" and sounds much less exciting. Gearbox is much nicer though...

I have been lurking about on here for a while now, but thought I would finally sign up since I have one of these. In a year and a half of ownership it has proved to be awesome fun with only a few downsides;
Failed ionic spark detection module - fixed under warranty, although I would hate to think of the cost
Fuel usage - 18mpg usually, less than 200 miles out of a tank once
Tyres, they seem to vanish quickly!
Gearbox is a bit of a nuisance in slow traffic.
On the up sides, it always puts a smile on my face, is very comfy when required, very nice to drive on the local back roads and is actually pretty good in snow too with winter tyres.
