Six months ago I decided I needed a more practical car and changed by 997 tt for a 4.4tdv8 Range Rover. The RR is a great car but I'm feeling the need for a quick car again and having had a few Ms previously I am very tempted by the F10 M5. My office is 100 miles from home and whilst I recognise that a M5 isn't the ideal choice for the miles I cover I'm prepared to sink some £ into a running a car that makes me smile. However range is an issue for me since I don't want to be filling up all the time (I had a 5.0 M6 and the 250 mile range drove me mad). On motorway runs what range are owners getting from F10 M5s? 400 miles+? Thanks.

The F10 M5 has an 80L tank and the V8TT is significantly more efficient than the V10. You can easily get 400 miles of motorway driving, 500 is pushing it but possible with a little restraint.

That's bang on the money.

For what they are, they are surprisingly economical, day and night compared to the E60.

As I mentioned on here recently, I drove from Essex to Loch Lomond on a single tank, about 450 miles or so.

And I was not cruising at 70.....

I had a 2013 M6 Cabrio (same engine) it's pretty good on a run - I got 33-35mpg if I stuck it into cruise control at about 70mph. Only thing I'd say though is that despite insane power and acceleration from that engine, I did not find it a particularly fun car to drive. So just make sure you really test it out to ensure it's fun enough to make the extra cost worthwhile.

I get 400 miles or so but do not let it go down too low in the tank , maybe two thirds above the empty and 1/4 tank marks.
This = 24 MPG or there abouts on average, mostly out of town driving. No short journeys .

About £90-100 to fill the tank.

Around town about 350-400 miles - not much out of 1-4th gear with constant start/stop.

Motorway - 400-500 miles easy. Depends how heavy your right foot is.

I'm going to get flamed for this but why not go for a 640D with the M Sport package?

You'll be getting 35-40mpg on them all day long, maybe more on the motorway meaning you'll only have to fill it once a week rather than 2 on the F10 M5 or 3-4 on the V10 model you had previously.

Defo get 400 motorway miles on a tank. If you can keep around 75-80 you'll get closer to 500 miles.

That said, it's hard not to bury the loud pedal every now & again. Had a tool in an Evo in the wrong lane off a set of lights earlier & although i shouldn't i felt the need to demonstrate my point (i did yield once he'd realised his predicament). That kind of behaviour doesn't help the overall MPG.

Thanks all. The 640d is also a possibility.

I have a brand new one on loan for a week or so till my M6 GC CP arrives, handed my LCI M5 in today.
The 640D M sport is returning 48/50 MPG eek, it had 17 miles on the clock, it's doing about twice my M6 , well it goes well but it's NO M6.

I think that's exactly the point, the modern big derv engines are great units and the compromise of economy and performance they represent the sensible choice. Trouble is emotionally a m5 is an exciting prospect, a 640d much less so.

Don't do it! The big DERV's are boring as hell to drive. I've had most M's and convinced myself that a 535D would be 'almost' an M and save me a few quid on running costs.

It wasn't even close. No fun to drive, dull throttle response, dull transmission, crap noise, no sense of occasion when driven, I could go on but you get the picture wink M all day, every day.

Have to agree, you just get these diesels into full power and they run out of puff @ 4K RPM.

Had a sensible (only a couple of blats) run from West Lancs to Suffolk & back & managed 481 miles on a tank this week. That was cruising at 80mph & a few A/B road hoons.

Could have broken 500 with ease if i'd behaved better but no point having an M5 & behaving.

Wow, that's almost 28mpg ish? Stunning performance for a near 600BHP (I don't care what people say, these things are running at nearly 600BHP standard!) 2 tonne mega saloon.

To think, you were getting that sort of economy on 2.0 Vauxhall Vectras just 10 years ago.
