Thanks Zyp
Found quite a lot of useful info on the BMW website, thanks.

What did you think of the sound it makes? I assume it didn't bother you hence your order.

Can second the Internet thing, don't get it, absolute cr*p.
I've said it before. The sound a car makes is way down the list of things that influence my purchasing decisions. It's all about the drive for me. How it goes, stops and handles and how much fun it is.

Had a chat with a new m3 owner yesterday. He loves it and has just had the running in service. Said it feels a lot quicker all around than the e92.

It's the first one I've seen in the flesh. The seats looked great, I hate the seats in my m3.

First off, has anyone out there gone for a manual? What's it like? Does the auto downshift blip work well? Does it expose some engine turbo lag?

Second up, what sort of mpg are people getting on a run? Can you hit mid thirties?
I test drove the M3 ( I owned the E90 M3 from new some time back).
I found the seats uncomfortable and there is NO option but to have them.

I had the car for a day, and got tired of the noise inside the cabin TBH, it handled well for a "B road blast" but a bit boy racer for me.

You must test drive one FIRST before putting your money down.

Sounds like the Alpina B3/B4 would be ideal for you.

In fairness, that's no different to most cars. You rarely get a choice of seats.

I was happy to place my order without a test drive based of feedback from other owners (Palmball) and reviews like Chris Harris's Drive video.

I think you will find Palmball has got shot of his already.

I pick up a New M6 GC Comp Pack in a week or two, I opted for the "Multi-function seats" I had these in the M5, they are great IMO.
PS) I am getting on a bit so that would influence my choice a lot, IF I was 25 then the M3 would be on my list.

I know. But that's nothing new for Andrew smile

His discription of how it drove and handled was what I was concerned with. Not what it sounded like, or how good/bad the stereo was, or that he didn't like the shade of red.

I wanted a fast, fun, compact, rear-wheel drive, 4-door, 4-seat, premium brand everyday car that could be used on track. The options are pretty limited..

Thanks JM. I know I'm asking quite a lot from it but I'm putting my faith in M Division that they've done a good job on this one.

I have a DCT so can't help with your first question, but I can confirm 33-35mpg on a run with ease.

Cheeky..... wink

Knowing what you want from a car Jack (mainly handling?), it's probably ideal (although do see my comments on the brakes thread). Personally, if I intended to keep it I'd have also spec'd ceramic brakes all day long as they were soooo good on the M6. The standard brakes were OK but groany and fraught with problems.

You've spec'd full leather and that's the only thing I would definitely recommend given how relatively plasticky the standard interior is (it's not bad, just not £60ks' worth when it's so similar to a 114i.

If you hadn't mentioned 'to be used on track', you know I'd have recommended to hold on for the new C63....it's likely to be the 'nicer' overall road car (although I doubt I'll get much agreement to that in this particular forum sub section wink )

Recently flipped my f10 for m3 as my daily run around and very happy! Initially was not to sure but after 1100 miles really enjoying it. Car has F10 straight line pace but in the corners much more agile, once on the move this is a deceptively fast car. Noise is different to anything previously experienced but not as unpleasant as some of the comments on these threads ,actually I'm getting to enjoy it however it's created. Brakes can feel a little rough when used very hard and would consider the ceramics if ordering new car from scratch. Sport settings for engine, suspension leaving steering in comfort seem to be my preference on set up. Sure your not going to be disappointed Mr Jackwood , pm me if you require more info.

Have you driven One?

Lots of road noise?
Fake noise?
Yes...a lot of road noise.....I wondered whether the Mic under the bonnet is picking up the tyre noise.......sounds like a door is only half closed

It will be coming from the solid rear axle location. It's the same in my GT3 when I rose jointed it. Makes a big difference to the road noise transmitted into the cabin.

Thanks for all the other info.

Andrew, the brake issue seems to be on the steel and carbon brakes, which suggests to me it's almost certainly hand brake related.

I agree that as a road only car the new C63 will almost certainly be a better option. Especially now that they have FINALLY seen fit to install diffs on their cars as standard. About bloody time. But I've never had an M car and like that they appear to be slightly more "track ready". We shall see.

I know I'm sounding like a stuck record but if you had come from an E92 M3, I'm sure your opinion on the sound a car makes would have been different. In my own experience I wouldn't have rated the sound very highly until I owned a V8. Now for me that is quite near the top, make of that what you will biggrin I too am hanging on for the C63 Mercedes-AMG. And I normally dislike Mercs but they've made a good decision - in my opinion - to keep the V8. Styling wise I'm on the fence.

By the way you will be able to order Individual cloth seats if you prefer on the M3/M4s. No word on pricing yet though, still waiting.

New C63 will be 75 bags with sensible spec I believe.

Also won't the new car be Turbo......No don't get any ideas of the wonderful V8 bellow of old.

AMG's new turbo V8 sounds just fine - not far off the 6.2. At least it does in the GT and I can't see why the C63 would be significantly inferior. Power delivery is another question that none of us can answer yet, although I have to say I prefer the ultimately less effective characteristics of a N/A engine.

Just come back from the Paris show and the C63 looks good in person, especially in estate form. Funny little upright spoiler on the edition one version. Seats are incredible (I didn't sit in it, but they're the same items as in the GT) and they have (electrically) adjustable thigh support....which ironically BMW have moved away from in the latest M3. The steering wheel is a lovely chunky little item.

Wow, those seats! Nice to see Mercedes have upped their game finally. Shame the coupe is so far off.
