I expect performance brakes to make a noise (like squealing) but these just felt worn out and you could feel the groaning through the wheel (not like a vibration as you'd get with warped discs, just a strange sensation'). Again, no fault found.

I thankfully never had the brakes actually seize and stop the car moving but one thing's for sure....it wasn't right. And if we kept it, it would've driven me mad not getting to the bottom of what the problem was.


What with these issues with the brakes, the rattles from the interior trim and the creaky door seals, I'm glad to be shot of the thing!
The M4 I tested had rattling interior which was very loud and also creaked. Additionally the cold start up noise was awful. The bootlid resonated like it was going to break.

Forgot to mention the conclusion
Got my money back in full
BMW. Uk didn't want to know and said it was down to dealership to handle refund.
Took quite a few phone calls saying I want my money back, when I mention I would contact bbc watchdog it seem to have desired effect.
I have asked what was going to happen to the car, I was hoping it would go back to BMW uk or hq to sort the problem, which would make me comfortable issued is resolved and I could think again about getting one.
Basically left for dealership to sort out.
They were going to put some miles on the car to try and find the problem.
I Have asked monthly if they had found the problem up to recent they hadn't , then got vehicle mileage verification form this week saying car was sold on 3rd December!
Asked again and no reply so far.
So if you have a F80.M3 reg no VK64 HVM , be careful when you stop in traffic on the motorway!

A real long shot but....

I believe that these cars employ a new type of two-piece disc brake. The disc is constructed from two parts, each made from a different material. The outer disc is secured to the inner hub via a series of pins which allow movement along the pins upon heating/expansion and cooling/contraction of the outer hub. I believe that the aim is to reduce warping of the disc.

Could this possibly have something to do with it? The disc/pad clearance on a new car is likely to be fairly minimal and if the pins don't function properly then a small degree of transient warping could result - sufficient to foul disc onto the pad therefore stopping you from moving off until the assembly (hopefully) pops back into position under compression from the outer hub. Could that explain the 'twang'?

Like I say, it's a real long shot but can't hurt to suggest it.

But do feel free to tear me to pieces biggrin

I ran an F80 M3 for 13,500 miles and I've just bought an M4 Competition Pack that I've done 1,300 miles in. So I think you could well be onto something. The floating discs almost certainly contribute to the noise under repeated high speed, high retardation stops, but I think the fault lies with the "hill hold" that I think uses the handbrake to hold the vehicle to prevent burning out the DCT Clutches.

I had the issues you describe only a few times and almost all when I first had the car. The remedy is either to use the brakes hard once a week or to pull on the handbrake once a week to clean the pads / discs off. It would appear that they gently corrode on when they get wet or haven't been used and "spring" release when you use them. Usually worse after pressure washing and leaving the car in situ. That's the only time they "bound" on for me .... smile
