Schermerhorn's is the reason there's not one parked on my drive as I type this.

There's just too many stories of great examples that are still ruinous to own. I adore that V10, but despite having owned more than my fair share of wallet busters I'm just not brave enough.

I've always figured I was just as capable as guessing wrong as the dealership, I just do it cheaper.
Nicely put; that made me laugh.

When you're the guy paying the bill yourself you tend to be a bit more motivated to ensure you get the right fix the first time rather than throwing parts at the car until the error messages stop.

I agree. I wouldn't do it it again even though it has cost me nothing apart from fuel, tax and insurance. That's the beauty of the AUC warranty.

Having said that though, I'll never say never but if I did it all over again, I'll always go for AUC and pay the premium.

The thing is, how many of these cars will be AUC in the future? They are becoming 10 year old cars now and not many dealers will want them in circulation.

If however you get one that has had clutch, flywheel and other known niggles done you've got a good car. If it hasn't, then it can be hair pulling.

I had the same feeling, had ours for 18 months now,6k's, 2 rear tyres, oil service, brake fluid change soon(£88 dealer £50 independent), begrudgingly £500 a year road tax ffs, and £220 insurance.

The only thing that bothers me is a fecking annoying intermittent rattle which I cant source !!

But I do wonder on how many of the 1800-ish sold in the UK have been trouble free !

I'd love one myself, but I just know that it would let me down, and I can't have that. It's why I'll stick with my E39 until I want a change, and tbh it'll likely be a VXR8, as Ford Falcon XR6 Turbos are very thin on the ground here.

Hey lads,
I started this topic a couple of weeks ago & the response has been very informative & helpful, thanks to who contributed.
With your help I have decided to not go for a high miler instead go mid miles mid price after all its going to be weekender car.Anyway there are 2 cars I'm interested in after millions of pages & phone-calls & several test drives.
1st guy has it on Autotrader;Grey 06' has it at 16995ono.1 owner 59k miles...the ad itself somewhat corny at least, not sure where he lives & have'nt been able to contact him even though I have mailed him 3 times through Autotrader, why because I live in Southern Ireland & phonesafe will not work from my area,I have contacted Autotrader about this & to no avail,he has'nt seemed to have received my mail !! I don't know..strange but true. If someone can make contact through phonesafe & pass his mobile on to me I'd be grateful.

The other 1 is a dealer is on this site from Middlesex;Grey 06' 65000 miles similar price, this car looks better on paper has the work done clutch, flywheel etc.The dealer, well his colleague said on the phone he unfortunately could'nt take less for a straight deal...Hmmm.
Anyone know of this dealer, the not sure i can mention their name on this forum.

If anyone knows these cars or are in your area,a tall order i'm asking maybe,I would again appreciate your help in my quest & would save a perhaps unfruitful trip, otherwise i would gladly take the advice & the flight to happily purchase, don't ask i just like Grey in colour...not flash maybe.

Regardless any positive info would helpful.Thanks.

There's 5 or 6 for sale up our part of the country to save you the trip across the water. This one looks fantastic, hopefully a good bit of bargaining room built into the price!

Price is about right as it's very low mileage but you could have the expense of a new clutch and flywheel soon. Clutch & flywheel replaced on mine at 39k.
Most with similar miles (30k) are priced over 20k but factor in cost of clutch if it's not been changed.

I think your making the right decision in spending a bit more money to get a better example. You need to decide if you're going down the BMW Mondial warranty route or not, if you are buy one under 60k as it will save you quite a bit each month. I have had mine for a year and not had to use the warranty yet but I feel more comfortable driving it knowing most things will be covered and that BMW will come out to me if I get stranded. I've never bothered with warranty before on any car and am quite handy with the tools ( built an engine for my old track car etc) but I think the M5 is too complex for me to work on.

Good luck , they are truly epic cars.

Just had a quick look at the grey 59374 miles advert, I wouldn't waste your time on this one. Advert and pics are crap plus just look at the pic of the alloy it's chewed up around the edge of the rim, horrible. I think you would be very disappointed travelling all that way.
You might have to wait a bit but try and buy one from an enthusiast on one of the forums. When I was looking their wasn't much about that was any good so I put a post on here saying I was looking for one and got a few replies. Bought from a fellow member on here ( car wasn't even advertised ) thoroughly nice chap to deal with and the car was faultless. Thats how I sold my my E39 M5 just through messages on a BMW forum no advert.

For about 17-18k you should get one under 60k that's had clutch plus under Mondial warranty plus very very good condition with a good spec of extras, just wait for the right one to come up.

Thanks for that jmbmwm5.Interesting.

Them posts were from 2012,he must be doing something right he's still going.!!

I spoke to him last week no pressure on the phone, although he was'nt prepared to drop too much for a straight deal, couple hundred that was it!!

Seems like a canny bloke trying to make a few quid...hmmm.
