My 8 year old zM has been off the road now for 2 weeks due to BMW being unable to supply a replacement handbrake lever. The need for a new one was the reason it failed its MOT. German HQ refuses to say whether it has a part or, if it does, when this might be delivered to the UK, despite the order having been prioritised by BMW UK.

So, what was a £46k car 8 years ago is virtually valueless owing to the lack of an MOT.

I know I could probably find a non-official part online somewhere, but I have only ever put my car through main dealer( due to it being damaged twice by independents in the past), and want to continue doing that if I can.

I have emailed all the popular motoring press to see if the story interests them. Does anyone have any similar tales?

What's wrong with the original lever? Some years back the ratchet on my E46 wasn't holding in one sector as the teeth had worn a bit - I removed the lever and after a few minutes with a file it's been fine since.

EBay a well regarded BMW breaker? I am sure it will be the same as an E36 right?

Get the OE part number. I bet it is the same as an E36 or E46 part.

Same part as E36 M3, which is the same as any other e36, with the exception of the Black Nappa Leather grip, irrc.

BMW will probably be waiting for components from a 3rd party supplier, it's a pretty common issue.

I was waiting for 3 months for bmw to supply a pair of driveshafts for my car & one of the csl register chaps has been waiting for some 18 months for a warranty engine from bmw.

Pop along to zroadster.net, there's a guy on there called 'spurs fan in a coupe' who breaks z3's. Might be able to help you with a used one.

An 8 year old ZM will be an E85 or E86 Z4 not an E36/7 or E36/8 Z3.

As others have said the part is likely to be shared with an e36/e46 or a z3.

If you find out the part number and if it is shared then you will be able to pick one up second hand. Plenty of z4's being broken so shouldn't be too hard to find one.

ETA part number looks to be 34406774798

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions. I did manage to locate the part from another source online. My only problem is that I prefer putting it through main dealer servicing for everything, simply because it has been badly damaged on each occasion that I have used an independent BMW specialist. In one case it was nearly written off.

ETA motorsport are highly regarded and relatively near to you although Iv used Technosport in NW London.

If you go onto M3 cutters or Z4 forum there are plenty listed on there which you may want to consider smile

Worth asking the dealer if they'll fit your part, if that's important to you?

Surely a £15-20 used handbrake on eBay is worth trying?

If you are in nw London then use birds autos. They are as good if not better than any official dealer.
