Hi,

I'm approaching that time where a change of car is going to happen.

E90 M3 is one option, as is the C63, as is the Panamera.

Does anyone have any info on reliability of the DCT transmission and likely life expectancy for the DCT transmission? I know it won't be cheap if it breaks, but would be good to know how long these units are likely to last before hitting problems.

DCT based on all accounts seems to have great reliability with very low failure rates. Clutches are meant to last lifetime of vehicle, apparently the dual clutch plates and electronic shifting significantly reduce clutch wear compared to a manual.

You should try DCT out though, its hard to describe but it's not like a manual or automatic car .. I got a DCT as my wife couldn't drive manual and it's handy for heavy traffic.

I haven't heard of too many problems with the DCT box and it is by far the best transmission I've had in a car.

As said above already best auto I have owned. I like the way you don't have to sit on the brakes in traffic like normal autos. The speed it can change gear whilst offering you the ability to adjust how hard or smooth it engages at the flick or a switch is also nice to have and brings it closer to being a manual.

Thanks guys,

Looks like I can keep the M3 on the list. Has to be an auto transmission, as my wife will drive it. She's got a manual licence, but her co-ordination of clutch and gas pedals is, errrrr, interesting! Can't quite bear the thought of the abuse that a manual car would get!

In that case the clutch would be the last of my worries! I'd buy her a £1k shopper.

Doesn't seem to be that many DCT bad reports. Treat it with a bit of respect and leave the launch control alone and it should be fine.

Don't touch the Launch control on the DCT are your singing. MDM + Normal EDC + Power for the M button.

The gearbox is solid, no worries there.

The launch control is seen as a useless thing as it doesn't really control the wheel spin at most of times.

Launch control on the e92 is rubbish for a 0-60 time, but great for having fun.

Looks like the E90 is a good option.

No point buying the wife another car though - she's already got one but always grabs mine whenever she can "because it's nicer to drive".

Think I'll be looking for a good 4 door version in the new year.
