S85 V10 Rod bearing issues in the UK
Discussion
There seems to be an awful lot of talk about rod bearing failure on the M5Board forum but mainly about cars in the states. So I was wondering, how many owners have had issues with theirs over on this side of the pond?
Perhaps list a few details about the car such as age, mileage, has it had any track time, is it stock etc
Hopefully we won't see any more posts after this one!!

Look up member GJS on M5board. He's in the UK and has replaced the rod bearings on probably 10 or more cars. Not in the UK, but Duschanio (on M5board) is in Germany and has done better than 25 cars. Some get lucky, some don't. There's a guy who's made a nice business selling S85s in the states and sold over 120 in two years. 98% of those have been due to spun bearings.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. What's the easiest way of checking the condition of the bearings?
Has anyone done this? If so, how much did it cost and which company did the work?
I may give PMW a call to see what they say.

The only way to check the condition of bearings is to get everything out and see the bearings yourself. What's the easiest way of checking the condition of the bearings?

That's unless you've seen metal shavings during your oil change. (fingers crossed that doesn't happen)
I assume that you're interested in doing this since your M's at over 60k+ mileage.
If so you're better off changing them anyway cus the labour cost is gonna be significant (not worth checking it then doing it next time again).

Completely agree. The parts cost is inconsequential in comparison to the labor. While you're in there it worthwhile to change the VANOS pump tensioners, the VANOS high pressure line, and thoroughly inspect the VANOS drive gears (on the pump and crankshaft) for any sign of wear. That's unless you've seen metal shavings during your oil change. I don't trust very many people to touch my engine, but if I lived in the UK I'd head to Luton and have Raikku at Evolve do the job.

That's exactly my trail of thought.I don't trust very many people to touch my engine, but if I lived in the UK I'd head to Luton and have Raikku at Evolve do the job.
Do Evolve do general maintenance and servicing as well then?

birds auto (m40/m25 junction area) are well worth considering as well. They have lots of M-car experience and a very good reputation.
Thanks but as Evolve are very well respected in tuning circles, I was just wondering if I could take an M5 there for some servicing etc. Also try Phil http://www.cpcpe.com
knows his M cars inside out
Evolve can do what you want too, decent guys.
