That pretty much sums it up for me with the alteration that i prefer the styling of saloons & really don't need the additional practicality of estates. This is an extremely interesting thread.
I currently own a Audi S5 V8. I have been looking at replacing it with a RS5 however I have noticed the M6 has really dropped in price and looks extremely attractive.That said it has all the power but such little traction. There is a video of a guy driving a M6 in autumn and he continuously is complaining about the car losing traction. Makes me think why have all that power if it's not accessible.
The interior on the M6 is stunning. It really makes the RS5 look old.
I know they are not comparable on many levels. However they are in a similar price bracket on the used car market.

Once you get to 500bhp in the V10 M6 you really need some very good tyres to get the power down. If he has been buying cheap or they're past they're best he'll be losing a lot of grip. I had a new 911 in 2004. It only had 355 bhp. I remember seeing a Top Gear episode where they raced one the same against an M6 and a baby Aston across a stretch of closed road on the Isle of Man. The 911 was 6 seconds quicker than both the others which were quite close. Both the other cars had more power. So what's the point - if you buy one of these high performance cars you really need to spend a lot on tyres to get the best out of them at lower speeds - and even then you're probably not going any quicker then the cooking diesel version.I currently own a Audi S5 V8. For me, I plumped for the RS6. I personally prefere the c7 A6 to the F10 5 series. I prefere the looks and the interior . Also, 4 wheel drive with 500+bhp is better wet or dry imo.
But the clincher was the fact that I need an estate.
I will say the M5's 'box is better than the rs's 8 speed auto(which is bloody good).
As for which handles the best 'on the limit' it's a bit acidemic in my opinion as both a far too fast/capable to get anywhere near their respective limits on the road and as for how they fair on track, neither Interests me in the slightest to find out, I'd rather hire/buy a caterham or more suitable car for track days .
But the clincher was the fact that I need an estate.

A fair reflection IMO, we just can't get near power usage out of these monsters, my next car will be something a bit more usable in the real UK driving world. But the clincher was the fact that I need an estate.

So I've just watched this. I'd guess that it is a loan car for press types to play with. He does say that the day prior he was playing on an air field with some other cars. This leads me to think that maybe the car's tyres were past their best. Also he comments about cobbled streets and leaves. I've driven in Rome on damp cobbled streets and they're like an ice rink. Anyone who has driven on leaves knows they're also slippy. So where does that leave us, back at the question of poor or worn tyres and even with good tyres it is no surprise you can't get traction on cobbled streets or damp streets covered with leaves.I don't know what the different m modes mean but I do know that some of the aggressive setups allow some slip, so is this really surprising if he has attack mode engaged?

I have owned a BMW (not an M series) but I have a couple of friends with M series BMW's (M3 and M5) and sorry but the RS6 is just the nuts. It's a complete beast and aside from anything else since when can you do 0-60 in 3.7 seconds in a M5 with a tumble dryer in the boot!! Or to the airport with your family and 4 suit cases in a car that will give most Supercars a run for their money. So for me it's an RS6 everyday of the week. But hey we are all different!

Interesting post! I had a c7 RS6 for 3 years before recently changing to an F90 M5. The RS6 was a beast but less exciting to drive than the M5. Will be interested to see what Audi do with the next one...DB77 said:

When you also have a TVR you drive that in the wet if you are after some excitement!! Lol... I do wish maybe you could turn off the Quattro when you want to get the rear end a bit ragged, but at the end of the day it is a beast and seems to destroy just about everything it comes up against on the road, in a straight line and especially around the bends with the Quattro and Dynamic pack.
