I have a hankering for a M Coupe (z3) E36/8 preferably in estoril blue, but it will have to wait.

well E39M5 is def better than E46M3

E60/63 are flawed beasts

E9 CSL has got to be up ther with E30

ID go

E9 CSL
M135i
E39M5
E46M3CSL

then the rest (never been near an M1 however)

E28 M5. A game changer, an awesome car in its own right and still superb today.

This.

In fairness, the only other M cars I have owned were e12 M535, e28 M5 and e36 M3 and I have driven the 1M, M135i and e39 M5. Although they were all great cars, it's the e30 that just does it for me. I love the styling but I also love the pure driving experience. I love the way it flatters my driving and the intuitive handling. The engine is awesome and all the elements just work so well together. There's nothing I would rather be in when driving UK B roads. It just feels special and has the looks to match.

And even if it was an M car (which it's not) it wouldn't make the top 3 using any of the criteria people might use to define one.

Unless mpg is the top criteria smile

And nearly never happened. The M88 was originally destined for an E30 335 CSi to use up spare production capacity

I would find it difficult to decide between the E28, E30 M3 and the E46 CSL as best ever M, but if shove tookover from push than I suspect it would be the E30

My obvious choice would be E30 M3 Evo,

However, i think in recent years the Z4M Coupe is right up there, as is the 1M in my opinion,

For me the E46 CSL is a good car, but I HATE the SMG!

I had an E92 M3 after my Z4MC, I felt it missed the mark by a long shot for an M3, i also had an M4 for a weekend from the local Dealer. it was OK.... if you like driving a playsation on wheels.

I also had a 3ltr CSi for a while, cool car, can see how the CSL was a weapon in its time too - but the 911 was a better car then (and i dislike porches) so it cant have been that great

shibby!

Not sure it's a tough one.

I really like the e46 m3, I think it's better than the e90 and the e36. I can't comment on the e30 because I have never driven one.

I do really really like the z4mc I think it's such a hilarious car to drive, so for me that's right up there too.

CSL? Maybe.

I should drive them all and make a decision. So lend me your car's! Haha

beer totally agree regards the E92 M3, for me though the Z4M's chassis isn't good enough for greatness in my view.

I think the E30 M3 although not my cup of tea as it's a 4 pot most would say is the best I reckon.

I dissagree on the Z4M coupe chassis - its the OEM front tyre width thats the problem, a few wee tweeks and the car/chassis/feedback is really good IMO, certainly far advanced from an e46 and just 'better' than the e92

Some nice yellow cars!

Have not driven all the cars in the m range but the best I've ever owned was an e30 m3 2.5 evo sport.

Love my e92 dct, but it's not as special as some of the older stuff.
