Been thinking for a while I need a car with more of everything but didn't really know what I wanted. But then I got a go of a Z4MC and couldn't get over how good it was. So I've been looking the last few weeks for a good one but wanted to know does anyone here own one, what running costs are like, what it's like to live with every day, etc.

I got one, and use it every day.

26mpg - on daily commute, town, motorway and country road 30 miles per day.
19mpg for fun.

£836 for my inspection 2 service at a dealer at the weekend.
£150 or so for oil service.

£600 for a set of 4 tyres buying online.

£250 for insurance (im 31, and its actually £200 less than my old M3)
£500 per year for road tax.

I think its an absolute riot to drive, it is quite stiff though so can be a little draining on ste roads.

Its fun, quick and they seem to be holding their values well right now.

Have fun!

I've had one for almost 2 years now. It's a real event to drive, the noise alone is tremendously addictive.

It's practical, the boot is a decent size and easily swallowed all of our camping gear for a long weekend in Le Mans. On poor roads it's a little tiring but I found slightly dropping tyre pressures helped in that regard.

Mine is up for sale at the moment, happy discuss offline if you'd like.

I run one, imo a great car though if practicality is an issue then an e46 m3 goes some way close to providing the same thrills (namely the s54 screaming to 8k). Having had both the Z4 certainly excites me more, you're a lot lower in the car, the rack is a lot quicker and the wheelbase is a lot shorter (which leads to some disadvantages in handling compared to the m3 but also some advantages).
Servicing costs are pretty reasonable and a good indy is your best bet, notice you are in wales so if you can make it to Lydney then Simpson motorsport is your place. Anywhere that services m3s will have no problem with these cars as very similar underneath.
Get one, you won't regret it I'm sure!

It's the insurance that surprised me. I'm 25 and it would be £312. That's less than I pay on my vRS currently. Is there anything I need to look out for with one of these?

There were some issues with engine mount bolts failing, although AFAIK it's pretty rare. Alternatively with the M3 you need to be aware of cracks in the boot floor.

When looking at a car I'd be checking the service history (including the running in service) and that the tyres are of the right spec.

Had mine for 7 years and 90k miles now. Was a daily driver up until about 3 years ago, now its firmly a weekend/track toy. Love it to bits.

Hear, hear. Mine an 07 which I've had for four years and it's not skipped a beat. The noise, the outrageous diff, the sheer lunacy of the thing... love it. A proper car, the likes of which we'll not see again. Genuinely finding it hard to replace, so in the garage it stays.

Had mine 6 months and got it from BMW AUC. I think running costs are not too bad and on the long motorway journey after I picked it up it did 30mpg. Service inspection 2 is due next on mine and that could be expensive, around £1000 so get one with that done if possible. Running cost should be helped by low depreciation as these are now starting to hold their value.
The car itself is brilliant and an occasion every time you drive it. The engine sounds great even when you're not thrashing it. I would recommend one.

Super cool cars, very special place to be. I felt it was very much BMW's take on a TVR.

My dad has one, was going to replace it with an Aston Vantage and decided the BMW was a better car!

I have a z4m as weekend/fair weather car and I love it. Can't think of a single drawback. It feels like a real event - the noise alone is amazing, and feels special to drive.

I'm on my second Z4MC. Regretted selling my black one a few years ago once I realised driving other cars how special the Z4MC is to drive. My current is the interlagos blue which looks the dogs whatsits. As from above posts its a real event to drive and given the performance on tap is very good bang for the buck. The car loves to be taken through the full rev range and the noise is fabulous on full tilt. Buy one you will have no regrets.

Absolutely this. Ignoring super saloons (m3s etc) the z4 m is a total performance bargain. Only the 996 911 comes close really and they are much more marmite than the zed. I see 911s and Astons on a frequent basis but Z coupes are more likely to make me turn my head!

The only thing I think the Aston V8 has over the BMW in real terms is a much better ride, the M Coupe is punishingly stiff over poor roads. Easily fixed though I am sure.

Actually the ride isn't so bad - and no worse than my old 3.0 even on non run flats.
Been out in mine today and can't tell you how much I like it

The Z4MC is a gem of a car. High road tax offset by zero depreciation. One of motorings best kept secrets. This is mine which I have owned for 12 months. Love it to bits.

Did think about other options but I got another go last week and seems to get better the more I'm in it. Really searching hard for one now. Has to be a Coupe with satnav and rear sensors.

One thing I've noticed is how well they hold value. Some I've seen with multiple owners but still advertised for strong money. Seems you can't get a tidy one for less than £15k

These are beautiful looking cars, but the shocking build quality ruined ownership for me.
No real issues mechanically, but the fit and finish never failed to disappoint.
It doesn't stop me admiring them, every time I see one though.
