Would considering a Manual e92 M3 without warranty be a terribly bad decision?

A few weeks ago BMW put the price up from £80ppm to £122ppm on sub 60k m3's..

Would I bet better chucking that £120 into a separate Bank account and using it as and where necessary?

Thanks

What about an aftermarket warranty? There seems to be a couple getting good reviews on here.

That can't do the used prices much good.... I would want a warranty on one after reading m3cutters.

you want a warranty

i have done nearly 40k miles in my manual e90 m3 - which is now up to 72k miles.

about 2 months ago i deliberated and ultimately continued the warranty when the warranty expired - it was something like 65k miles and i paid £1647 for 12 months comprehensive warranty. my friends thought i was insane spending that amount on a car that is probably worth under 20k

about 3 weeks later i had some issues and took the car into the dealers - which resulted in two throttle actuators/wheelspeed sensor and other stuff i can't remember - and without labour it was over £2k in parts alone - this was all covered under warranty apart from £250 excess

i would not consider buying an E9x m3 without a warranty.

they are wonderful practical high performance cars - which in the real world are genuinely quick from A to B - but even though it might have the perception of deriving from humble 3 series underpinnings - do not delude yourself that they are cheap to run - they are not - they are great cars though and i absolutely love mine to bits - and with the peace of mind of the warranty drive it with enthusiasm - knowing should anything go wrong i do not have large bills round the corner

I think the scary thing with the e9x M3 is the engine, it does have a reputation for reliability but it's a very expensive piece of kit that S65 if it goes wrong and some have.

So I would get a warranty.

Yeah but you've paid nearly £2k in warranty and excess. An Indy would have fixed for a similar amount.

Issue is £122pm plus depreciation plus opportunity cost means leasing a new car looks attractive.

I remember reading old threads about not touching an e39 M5 without a warranty. A lot of it is scaremongering I'd say. When people quote horrendous labour costs for a repair it's always dealer costs. They're never going to be cheap cars to run but they can be run much more cheaply if you have a decent independent.

Mine's under its warranty at the moment but don't know if I will bother with an extended one. If it is 122pm, then £1400k per year gets you a lot of repair work. And if you do get a big bill one year (eg actuators) you are even less likely to get a bill the following year.

If it was £60 per month I may do it for peace of mind. Is the £122 for comprehensive with no excess? There may be a case for getting the minimum cover with £250 excess just to insure against any really big bills

Had mine 2 years and only tyres needed changing. Would of been 2.8k worse off if i took the cover. Yes it's a risk, you know that when you buy performance cars.

Thanks for the responses, Seem there's a nice divide lol.

The £122PM is fully comp, With recovery & £100 excess, Its £100PM when the excess is changed to £250.

Basically a 50% rise in costs from BMW in recent weeks for their warranty, Pretty awful hike tbh.

I'm looking at a 59-'60 car with 40-60k on it, Manual.

I think I'm gonna put the £120PM in a savings account and hope for the best that erm the Engine doesn't blow up lol.

Cheers

Can you drop the recovery as this may reduce the monthly cost?

Removing the recovery reduces it by £10pm, So Without recovery and excess @ £250 its still £92pm for even a 2011 with 35k, Seems expensive to me.

I need to have a look at some other warranty company's yet, Can anyone recommend any?

If you think people scaremonger for the S65 and S85, you should see what it's like for the 911 996.... if the internet was correct within three miles of having bought one Lucifer himself would turn up and pull your engine out through your wallet.

In reality it was a relatively big issue but I must have dealt with 30 or 40 996s when I was looking and only one had experienced any troubles.

My vote - get the car, put some money aside and enjoy it. Then if it goes pop, go to a decent indie as others have suggested.

Is this for all e92,s or are they charging £122 if it has not been under continuous warranty with them and £80 if it has. Just seems very strange that they would suddenly increase the price by that amount and they have always had a tiered pricing system that discriminates between one which has always been serviced and warranted with them and the "rest"

Let's not forget that a car under a manufacturer's warranty is a cash cow that needs milking, either by yourself or more than likely by the service department.
