F10 M5 oil usage
Discussion
Hi,
Anyone else with an F10 M5 care to comment on engine oil usage? Mine seems to be chewing (drinking?) it.
I popped in a couple of litres a couple of months ago which put it at mid/high level, and already i am getting a warning light saying it needs more.. Unsure on amount as not had time to place it on the flat, but i suspect it is below the minimum amount.

Usage varies massively, check the link below: -Anyone else with an F10 M5 care to comment on engine oil usage? Mine seems to be chewing (drinking?) it.

For the record mine's still holding steady (after 52,000 miles) at a litre every 3,000 miles with 90% motorway driving.
My M6 (same S63 engine) has used nothing at all (electronic dip stick still says full) since the last oil change almost exactly 6,000 miles ago.
Consumption is massively influenced by how the engine has been run for the first 50-100 miles. If you're too gentle with it, then the rings don't get seated fully and high oil consumption results. You need plenty of moderate revs (when warmed up of course) and to use plenty of engine braking.

Mine's on 8k miles (that includes a fair amount of Track miles) & not a jot of oil added.
I'll be getting an oil change at 10k miles as i feel for a performance engine, 18k miles between oil changes is too much. I reckon i may have to top up 1/2 litre before the old change as the display has the old between min/max.

I disagree with the mileage between oil changes for two reasons:I'll be getting an oil change at 10k miles as i feel for a performance engine, 18k miles between oil changes is too much. I reckon i may have to top up 1/2 litre before the old change as the display has the old between min/max.
If the car needed it BMW would change the timescale
It's a lease car, why bother?

Interestingly in other markets the oil change intervals are much shorter! The shortest is just 8 months or 12,000km between changes. If the car needed it BMW would change the timescale

I've done almost 11,000 miles and I haven't put any oil in. I've done a mixture of 30 minute drives around London at no more than 20mph and a lot of long motorway drives in Europe cruising at 130mph for two hours at a time. Sometimes my car doesn't move for two weeks or three weeks at a time.
I've no idea why it's never asked for a drop of oil but I did try to run it in as per the manual with just a couple of instances where I went to the top of the rev range.

Are you suggesting the M5 has different intervals in different countries?
Yes, there are. There are several different intervals depending on the market.S8KAA Oil-maintenance interval - 24 months/30,000 km
S8KCA Oil-maintenance interval - 24 months/24,000 km
S8KEA Oil-maintenance interval - 24 months/12,000 km
S8KKA Oil-maintenance interval - 18 months/15,000 km
S8KLA Oil-maintenance interval - 12 months/15,000 km
S8KMA Oil-maintenance interval - 12 months/12,000 km
S8KPA Oil-maintenance interval - 8 months/12,000 km
UK cars get S8KAA.

I would guess it's down to fuel quality and climatic conditions, I'd have thought that the oil would be identical or very similar. Being cynical you could think that the intervals are specified to get the car through the warranty period and after that they don't care too much. But to me, unless you have a lease car, it indicates that interim oil changes may help things later in the life of the engine and certainly won't hurt.

I'm sure the car 'can' survive 18-20k oil change intervals, but Lease Car or not i want it to run optimum performance & i unlike most track my car so i want everything running to it's highest possible level. The oil changes i choose will be carried out by an Indy & won't impact the service schedule as the computer won't be reset. More is better when running a performance vehicle & most tend to agree with such vehicles. If the car needed it BMW would change the timescale
