I've recently been watching the Z4M classifieds on PH and AT and have noticed that you rarely see them come up with warranty these days - there only ever seem to be traders selling them so no Mondial warranty.

Anyone know of a reason for this? Are true enthusiasts holding them all? Have they fallen into the wrong hands so no one has extended the warranty? Were all owners desperate to sell (for whatever reason) so have chopped them into dealers???

I quite fancy getting preferably a coupe but maybe roadster -but if the market stays so scarce I may have look back to Porsche....

Anyone know of anyone thinking of selling something in the short term????

Buy one under 60k miles and take out your own BMW Insured/Mondial warranty. Although these cars don't have fancy electronics like other BMW M cars and a warranty might not be essential anyway.

Also now isn't exactly the time of year when people are buying/selling cars like a Z4M.

Are you suggesting people don't get bored with them at this time of year or that if they do they are willing to hold onto a car they are bored by to possibly get a bit more money in the summer??? I can u see stand some but not all - I know when I am bored I just want rid and to move oto the next thing of interest.....

I expect a lot of people don't bother with the warranty. I don't have it anymore.

Just find yourself a good S54 M specialist and put the warranty money to one side. It's only insurance after all, so the majority will lose out.

Of course, mine might go bang tomorrow, but I would just get it rebuilt with better bits, or stick another engine in it.

^this^

Warranty at this age on these cars could easily be argued to be a waste of money. Just put some money aside, you'd be very unlucky to find yourself out of pocket imo.

That's strange as I've had 8 BMWs into last 10 years and I have always been grateful for having the warranty on the 7cars that were under it. I also wish I'd had it on my first Z3MC as that cost me quite alot on things going wrong. I only sold it to buy a newer one with warranty ( back in those days you could only get get the warranty if it had been continuously covered from new).

The older these cars get the greater the chance of something expensive happening. One of the main reasons I like BMW is because you can keep the warranty going on for many many years!

Never had a warranty on any of the BMWs i've ever had inc several M3s - except for an AUC on an approved e91 330d and an approved Z4m i've recently bought. Not interested in the warranty, never needed it and certainly won't be renewing it on the z4m when it's up.

Depends on the car. Can be worth its weight in gold on a car like an S85 V10 model. A less complicated model like an S54 powered M coupe or roadster Z4 it may not be needed.

I didn't renew my warranty after the car was 3 years old. I would say mine has had a reasonably hard life compared to some (numerous trackdays etc), and at nearly 8 years old and 90k miles, the only thing I've had go wrong that could have resulted in a potential warranty claim was this summer, when the voltage regulator went on the alternator. Cost me £80 to fix, but the symptoms were lots of flashing lights on the dash, which did set alarm bells with pound signs ringing.

However, I am safe in the knowledge that I have owned mine since new, and know exactly how well it has been serviced, and I am also quite mechanically sympathetic, even if the car does get a good workout. I can see why, if buying a car that has been through a few owners with an "unknown" history (regardless of the stamps it may have in the service book - it doesn't tell you how abused the drivetrain is or whether it was thrashed from cold etc), and you might be only looking to keep for 12-24 months, a warranty could give peace of mind, though at least in my experience, and that I've seen generally on the forums, I don't think these cars particularly need it.

Mondial/BMW Extended warranties can be applied to cars even if the policy has lapsed though. There is a 30-day delay between purchase and the warranty kicking in, in this case, and the price is about 15% higher, but it can be done. As long as the car has been maintained/serviced to manufacturer recommendations (not sure it even has to be main dealer), then you can put the warranty on there yourself. If it's a concern, factor it into the bargaining process when buying the car etc.

+2

Mines is now at a shocking 78K and outside of regular servicing hasn't needed anything (A few bits were done early on under warranty Traction Sensor replaced). I do have a fair chunk set aside if things go bang and it's still serviced at main dealer.
