IF you do go for one , make sure it has a good long BMW Warrantee , or be prepared for an expensive ownership if one of the unlucky ones.
You could say the same about many cars I guess. I am unlucky with cars, so my luck will probably end up with a bad one hehe

Thanks all. Due to the cheap purchase cost im not bothered about a £3k bill here and there as there's no depreciation.

Can't explain it but I much prefer the e60 m5 to the new one.perhaps it's worse in every way but the design looks so right. Future classic.

Think I've decided on an e60 m5, the m6 looks just don't sit well with me

Test drive time!

A test drive might influence you.

I tried both M5 and M6 virtually back to back and chose the one that most suited to my personal definition of fun. Nearly 160k miles now and still smiling when I drive it.

Either way, whether M5 or M6, you are going to enjoy a fabulous car.

Just be aware that there's sometimes big differences even between the same model (e.g. jerkiness of the SMG), go and test drive a few before making a decision.

Very good advice. There's a lot of ropey E60 M5's out there.

Been out in my E60 M5 today and i love it, had it just over a year and zero issues so far !

V10 M5 all day long. Especially E61, that's still a car I would love to own.

The M6 is a jack of all trades, master of none.

Don't forget that these cars learn the driver habits so all cars will feel different during a test drive unless it's been reset. If you can get an extended test over a weekend then that will allow the car to adjust to your style (do a TCU / SMG reset too so the box feels fresh and not lazy). You won't be able to feel for a worn clutch as they are self adjusting right up to the point where they fail. The only giveaway comes when the clutch gets hot and it may judder, but you have to look for it and know what you are looking for. Most importantly, drive it in paddle mode, S5. That's what it was designed for!

This is extremely sound advice! Along with putting it in P500 mode.
They're the first 2 things I do when starting the car - put it in manual/S5 and press the Power/P500 button.

Agreed manual S5 and I always press the power button as soon as I start the engine. Even just reversing out of the garage in P400 feels horrible. The only way I can explain it is the car is very slow at responding to input on the accelerator. In normal driving I don't always use M mode, depends why mood I'm in.

I test drove both the M5 and M6 and for me the M6 felt more special and rarer sight. Also at 29 i wanted another crazy car before i have to have 4 doors for a family and stuf smile I love the M6 always an event to drive and like someone else said pretty rare seeing one.

As you can tell judging by the replies in this thread, it's all down to opinion.

I prefer the M6 because of its 'exclusivity' factor while others say the E60 M5 because it is a proper bonkers car with practicality and a bonkers engine.

In the end though, as long as it has that magic V10 engine, you won't go far wrong biggrin

Glad you like it, that's all that really matters.

Many don't like them though, which will matter come time to sell!

For me - and it is purely personal preference - I'd go with the M6 because I had a 645 and although it was never a drop-dead gorgeous car, the look grew on me.

I saw a custom bootlid someone made for one (a known company) and that would sort a lot of the looks.

If you need to carry more than two people regularly, the 5 is a better bet, but if you don't or you want a larger boot the 6 is a good 'un.

I like the look of the new 6 series, but I am not sure I could live with the ridiculous weight gain over the E63. The 645 handled way better than any big car had any right to. It was awesome!
