Why has it got to be a good buy?

Way over-priced in the first place and in fact, according to many, not that good at all.

You can do better.

Also according to many others, a good car.

You could do better, you could do worse.
Can't find much wrong with ours that I couldn't find with another similar car.

Apart from the slight issue regarding needing a new engine I'm loving mine in the brief time I've had it

Exactly what I was looking for, a real Jekyll and Hyde car, smooth and comfy when you want it to be (within reason given the 19" wheels and low profile tyres) but press a few buttons and a real beast. That combined with 4 doors, 5 seats and a big boot.

Yes there are better handing cars, yes there are slower depreciating ones, but not too many wrapped up in one package

A few suggesting i could do better.
I have a 1M at present and quite fancy a fast saloon, not too expensive to run, a little under stated and is practical to do around 20k a year in.
What else should i be considering.
Not a fan of Audi's

Bit of a daft comment

Can't compare an old 911 with a new M3

Totally different needs would send you the M3 route coupled with a 3 year warranty 4 doors and 5 seats to name a few.

In the dry though ... you'd embarrass an RS4

I'd rather have a 'slightly used' M5 for that sort of money....or, wait another 12 months and that sort of money would get me into M6 Gran Coupe territory.
