I may be in the market for an M4/3 in a couple of years time when used prices have dropped a bit so I've been reading reviews/opinions with interest (used to own an E46 M3).

Haven't driven the M4 yet but have tried the M235i and I think it is a great car and the turbo engine didn't really detract from the overall package one bit. It'll be a cherished car one day when BMW stop making these for sure.

When people say that they have to drive the car at 10/10ths to enjoy, how often do they really do that any car? On a track it's a different issue but on the public road, you'll be heading to the slammer in no time (unless you are an MP or footballer).

I think watching the likes of Chris Harris hooning on a circuit has colored people's opinion and shift the perception of the only to 'enjoy' a car is to absolutely nail it to an inch of its life like the car journals - they don't have to dip into their pockets for burnt tyres and clutches remember.

If people want involvement at 'safer' speeds, then BMW M cars would not suit. You'd be better going for a Lotus Elise, they offer infinitely more feedback and enjoyment but obviously it will not have the advantages that the M3/4 offers.

I'm not sure that makes you an idiot....it would depend on what you go for!
So what are you going for?
I'm going to keep the E92 and see what the new C63 is like before deciding. I like V8 cars - there I said it!

I do not need a 4 seat car now as kids are growing fast and family outings are very limited, so it does mean I can consider a 911 of some sort (yes I know it is not a V8 but as others have said - the options are getting more and more limited each year)

Maybe I'll buy an old TVR again and just sit there listening to the V8 rumble and get an i3 for the day to day stuff?

The i3 is also zero BIK I believe so could buy through the company.

That is very sound thinking Batman!

I like the sound of the new C63, although it would only be on my radar if it came with a good DCT box that was fast and did what I wanted, when I wanted it.

The 991 C2S is stunning too....

I've always maintained that Alpina made better "daily" cars than the M-division. It seems BMW agrees too, as this is the space they now look to have moved into

That's a little harsh because we all know that BMW`s are only engaging if you are driving like a nipple because they are so accomplished(apart from the M4 from most reviews) and hide their speed really well so what`s wrong with buying something miles more exciting to drive?

I have changed from a 911 GTS 4 (997) into a new M4 a month ago.

Most of the reviews I read, or watched, were positive and I'm delighted with it.

I wouldn't consider an M6 or M5 (think they are both a bit big and ugly) and I'm not too bothered about how many cylinders it has, or how it handles on the limit (not really relevant to UK roads).

Are you not well or something?

That's one of the worst car changes I've ever heard of.

The 911 is fab, the M4 is not.

You'll get shot of it within a year!

Thanks for your input you are certainly entitled to your opinion but it has zero relevance to me ! Delighted with my choice.

997 GTS a classic in the making IMO.

Not sure about the M4.

It's not BMW's fault. They are just responding to demand.

Instead take issue with all the people on here who drive on motorways in heavy traffic, feel 'threatened' by turbo'd hot hatches and complain about 'lack of torque' and would prefer a better 'every day' car.

Well, you got what you wanted, basically a 335d that takes petrol and has an M badge stuck on the back.

Enjoy.

frown
This but more around the new emmision laws than anything, E60 M5 don't meet the new regs required from new build cars, turbo'd produce the power and thr emissions sadly.

I am curious about this as I'm thinking of a 911 rather than an M4, can you share what it was about the M4 that persuaded you to swap?

I love they way everyone seems compelled to tell the world how disappointed with a new car they are, seems to be a BMW M thing in particular.

The 911 was a great car to drive and looks great, but the interior and the equipment is a bit pricey and dated (mine was a 997). From a financial point of view I'm having a couple of years accumulating more properties so it didn't make sense to spend another £95k on a car.

The reviews of the M4 have been overwhelmingly positive - it's a great piece of kit (for me). Drives completely differently to the 911 but nice to have a change.

It doesn't tick all the boxes of the M "purists" but that's of no relevance to me (or most people!).

thanks, so it was mainly a financial decision - that makes sense. I've been prudent for a number of years now so the time seems right to invest in a 911 smile
