Discussion
I guess it depends what you are after in a car. If you want a car that is up there on the Nurburgring lap times, you should have saved some money and bought a CSL, as that "empirically" is quicker than both. For the point of this discussion though, I simply offered my opinion based on having a choice of both cars, having driven both, and having owned the previous two models. I chose the M5 and I'm happy I made that choice, and you chose the M4 and you're happy with that. I suggest we both go off and deal with our respective insecurities in private now

Are there not official statistics for things like 0-100mph or something ? That's empirical.
Youtube videos are not empirical unless you know that they were carried out under controlled conditions. That's pretty obvious !
I would say two cars running at the same time on the same piece of tarmac is a more controlled environment than manufacturer's times. The "official" times can be way out depending on temperature, track conditions, wind, etc. Just look at the difference in times for the same car published by different journos.Youtube videos are not empirical unless you know that they were carried out under controlled conditions. The M4 would be quicker on a track or twisty B road but doesn't really stand a chance in a straight line.

Agreed I didn't buy an M4 because I thought it was quicker, I still don't. I think the performance is broadly similar and haven't seen any evidence to the contrary.I wouldn't dream of going on a thread about M5's and slating people for the choice they made. That would be insecure
Oh ffs. Nobody is 'slating' anyone's buying decision directly, but we are free to discuss the car in itself. That is the point in this forum. If you bought an M4 then that doesn't make you immune from criticism , nor make the people criticising your car to be "insecure". If you don't want to read other people's opinions on cars then go to another forum.
Why are people so precious about the car they own? I have an E92 and it's nowhere near perfect; I've read various criticisms of its mpg, it's gearbox problems, depreciation, and they are all valid but I don't care because I love the car. If anything it makes you sound insecure for being so defensive.

Saw a phoenix yellow (or whatever colour it is) with black wheels M4 coupe today. My word, it is a head turner!
Sounded quite tasty when he gave it some too!
(doesn't sound as good as my V10 though - sorry, had to throw that in there!)

Interesting. For me the M5 is looks big and ugly (personal opinion obviously). It costs more to buy, costs more to run and is no quicker (in fact don't the stats say it is slower, or for practical purposes there is no difference).
So for me, absolute no-brainer to get the M4. Couple of people I know have ordered M4's wouldn't consider M5's for a second.
I guess if we all chose the same car life would be pretty boring.
When you say price difference in what way by the time you compare the specs & dealer discounts BMW are giving around 10-12% at the moment the M5 looks more viable. So for me, absolute no-brainer to get the M4. Couple of people I know have ordered M4's wouldn't consider M5's for a second.

Back on topic, must admit, the car looked very nice, but I bet is is more colour sensitive than the E92 version (or maybe that is just my perception). The saloon version does nothing for me unfortunately though though I am sure it is a cracking ride.
Sweet looking car. Wonder how they would compare to a V10 if you booted it. I suspect low down they'd destroy the older car.
