@RichardM5, that is fantastiche! Thanks.

So now when I am enquiring into cars for sale I can request the last seven number of their VIN and hey presto! I presume that you were able to work backwards to identify the chassis number from the information on your own database?

Yes, that's correct. I don't know of any on line resource that will allow you to lookup a VIN from the options - in many cases obviously there would be a lot of identical cars.

Thanks. So my odds of finding a good one, are not very high.

I wonder if this had been one of them...

None of the 10 are Titan Silver.

If you don't spec the through load system, there are 3 Titan Silver cars. The through load can be easily retrofitted, it just involves cutting out the hole in the rear fire wall and adding a bit of trim. Unlike folding rear seats, which are almost impossible to retrofit. That car is probably BJ11404, the other 2001 car, BJ11404, has double glazing and a phone.

I thought that through load was folding rear seats?

Sorry, you are absolutely correct, through load (S465A) is folding rear seats, similar to those in the Touring. The Ski Bag (S464A) is just the opening in the rear fire wall.

If I spec an ideal car, would you be able to identify how many were registered in the UK? smile

Granted, but that line of thinking would preclude one having maintained a thorough database, so we could approach this on a hypothetical basis...

Facelift info:

BMW M Registry said:
What changes were made to the E39 M5 during the time that it was produced?
Though there were no major mechanical alterations to the E39 M5 during its entire production run, there were a number of equipment alterations that appeared with the 2001 model-year M5 (from 9/00 production). These include:
  • Revised headlight design incorporating illuminated "Corona" rings
  • Revised tallight design
  • Park Distance Control sensors in the front bumper (previously in rear only)
  • Thicker three-spoke M steering wheel identical to the one fitted to the E46 M3
  • Grey instrument faces
  • Solar sensor for standard automatic climate control
  • Revised navigation/audio unit with larger (6.5-inch) monitor
  • Rear head protection airbags added
  • Second-generation M Mobility tire repair system in place of earlier version
  • Available M Audio System with special tweeters, Kevlar/carbon coaxial speakers and two subwoofers behind the rear console
  • Alcantara headliner included with Extended Leather interior (previously only included with Complete Leather)
For the subsequent two model years, changes were limited to the addition of new exterior colors (from 9/01 production) and the upgrade to a DVD-based navigation system (from 9/02 production).
Note that the mechanical revisions to the engine (extra O-ring and improved VANOS) arrived in March 2000, mid-way through the 2000MY that ran from Sep 2000-Aug 2001, so appears in both pre- and post-facelift cars, generally all in the 2000W and a few 2000X (UK) registrations.

However, it's a popular aftermarket modification to change the original black dials for grey ones, fit the later steering wheel and likewise the retro-fitment of later front and rear (not always together) lights, often just the fronts (mine has facelift fronts and pre-facelift rears) as the early E39 clusters, whether halogen or xenon (as were standard equipment on M5) are prone to condesation, the later ones not impervious either, but markedly better.

If I can positively identify a car as having been scrapped then I note it in the database, but there are a lot that I know of that have been scrapped that I have not identified.

Of course it will give an idea of the chances of finding your 'ideal spec' and you can factor in the approximate probability of it still being around. My guestimate is that about 30% of UK cars have been scrapped.

Booster seats are pretty rare in the M5, but I'd not say they were useless. When I was using my M5 as a daily driver they were very handy for transporting my two daughters, you need to put the arm rest down to stop them sliding about and I'd not use them on a long journey as a car seat is much safer. But for a short local trip they were very useful to reduce swapping car seats between cars.

One interesting point, from September 2001 ISOFIX was fitted, but if you ordered the integrated booster seats it was deleted.

The M-Registry lists most changes, but it's not gospel! Things I know of off the top of my head that are not listed :

- ISOFIX as above from September 2001.
- Change from BM24 to BM53 radio for Nav and consequent change of CD Changer audio if DSP fitted from mid 2001.
- Change from Mk II to Mk III Nav computer from Mid 2000.
- Change from Mk III to Mk IV Nav computer from September 2002.
- Availability of Bluetooth phone from September 2002.
- VANOS oil accumulator added and VANOS cover design change (older units have 4 allen bolts, newer have 5) February 2000.
- Oil ring redesign to reduce oil consumption, March 2000.
