I've always loved the styling of the E92 M3 and of course people rave about the S65 engine.

However the E60 M5 has recently caught my eye - its obviously a much bigger car, so perhaps a like for like comparison would be a bit strange. But how does the S85 engine compare against the M3's V8?

Maybe its been done to death before, but with my love for the E92 I've always looked past such comparisons...

Test drive them both then you'll know which one you want, both are good but the M5's fuel consumption is something else. I averaged 12mpg only had it three months great engine & car I can take 20's but the consumption was a step to far.

Depends what you want from the car?

I was looking at the B7 RS4, E90/92 M3, E60 M5 and the SLK55 AMG.
I broke it down to what I wanted - Supercar pace, luxury, comfort and an exotic sound and then there really was only one choice from the aforementioned!

Not many get to own a V10 and one of the greatest engines at that ever! Its utterly amazing and the speed at which it goes is a league above the others that were in my list.

Owned an E93 M3 and E60 M5, both very different to each other only way you will know what you want is to drive them and decide.

The M5 V10 is something special thats for sure, but as everyone will say the mpg is bad to another level (i was averaging 11mpg) but boy did that car make me smile with that muffler delete

M3 is a far more viable proposition.

I've had both, definitely prefer the M3 although not as quick midrange it's far more fun. Dct is far better than smg too.

The M3 V8 is a great engine, but the V10 is in a different league. The problem is that the costs of ownership are in a different league as well. Far too many scare stories about the M5 (and its M6 contemporary) for me to run one unwarrantied (if that's a word). Which is a shame because I was looking at a Silverstone car with red leather on Friday and it looked (and sounded) really really good.

I've had two e92 M3s - manual and DCT - and would definitely have another. DCT suits the engine better, IMO. And it's a great chassis.

I have owned 2 x E60 M5s, keeping them both for about 24 months each and doing between 30k-40k miles in each. I have also owned an E93 M3, which I owned for 3 months, before I sold it back to the BMW dealer I purchased from.

Personally, I found the E92 to have little/no sense of occasion, sure it was very good but for me, ultimately it was just boring and felt like a slightly up market 3 series. I had the manual if that makes a difference.

The M5 on the other hand always made me smile, just the sheer non sense of such a big heavy car accelerating like it can.

However, horses for courses, you should try both over an extended run and see which suits you best. And don't believe all the rubbish about the SMG in the M5, it suits the car perfectly.

I suspect running costs could be a decider? Neither will be cheap to run but one of these has a penchant for far more serious bills.

Like others have said, it depends on what you're looking for and the type of driving you do.

The E60/E61 is awesome (not that I'm biased) as for me, it's the ultimate car when in touring guise. It can transport the entire family in beautiful comfort one day and flying around a track on another.

Some hate the SMG but if you give it time and learn to understand it, you'll grow to love it and accept it for what it is.

Drive them both and let us know your thoughts.

Good luck.

V10 M6 is the last word . They will always make you smile . After a bad day and you have the hump. Give one of these a blast up the road and u will come back smiling , hopefully not with 3 points . The SMG gearbox is well suited to the car once you get use to it . My one has eissenmann rear boxes fitted and under load the car sounds fantastic . Caution though don't buy one without a BMW warranty , As parts are very expensive that is the downside along with its
Epic thirst , it drinks heavier then Olly Read !!(RIP). theres even a tickbox in the service booklet for greasing the Fuel Flap Hinge . So yes M5/M6 all day long

Don't be put off with running one of the V10 beats without a warranty.

You'll hear a lot of horror stories about the values of warranty claims but the majority of those claims will be huge profit margins for BMW. Labour is extortionate.

To prove my point, BMW will charge you circa £1200 for a flywheel which doesn't include an install cost whereas you can buy the very same part from CP4L for £467.
The same goes for the clutch.

I was interested in finding out how much a clutch and flywheel could cost me if mine went so I phoned up a reputable indy and was quoted £1500 inclusive of VAT for supply and fit of both using OE parts which is pretty good.

Exactly.

I'm running my E61 without a warranty but have the funds should things go pear shaped.

A lot of people seem to forget that it's a V10 supercar.

Just to add that today I had 4 brand new Conti Sport Contact 5p's fitted all round including VAT, balancing and fitting for £690! That is more than reasonable so as long as you shop around you can get repairs/consumables at more than reasonable prices!

To further add I found the NGK Iridium spark plugs for £169.20 for a set of 10! at Doctor carparts (didn't need them but good to just look around)
